Most are actually designed not to. There are a whole lot of interesting looks at how suburbans are designed (hint: keeping undesirables like African Americans out is a major feature). While the intent in 2015 may be less overt, those same i

I've heard it surmised that the biggest advantage the United States has in terms of entrepreneurship is our incredibly lax bankruptcy laws. It's easy to start a company, fail, and maintain the ability to do it again. This is partl

If I had to choose between two candidates with the same proficiency in a testable skill set (JavaScript, GAAP accounting, laying brick, whatever else), at this point I'd probably prefer someone who spent four years working on a fishin

I'd still buy the house. A 30 year mortgage on that $200k house @ 6% is going to cost me $1,199 a month or $431,676 over the life of that mortgage. If the house devalues to $180k my actual out of pocket money spent is $251,676. If I do

Even if that's true, you're average person on earth is generally better off than their parents were. In the United States it's not quite as cut and dry, but in general you are likely at least as well off as your parents. Infl

Here in Denver I see it all the time. I actually don't really notice it (a problem for them as so many competitors directly cloned them)... until that email receipt arrives. It's not ubiquitous here, but it's certainly common

The craftsmanship is obviously different, but is it better? I hear the argument that modern houses are all going to be just awful in a few decades. Yet I heard the same argument in the 70's and 80's, and those houses seem to be a

Uber drivers can hold more than one job doing exactly the same thing. They are free to pick up rides or not on whatever schedule they want. They bring their own equipment to the job. They've always seemed to meet the definition of cont

Think of a startup whose founders spent 70% of their time raising money, they would never get anything done. That's a bad example. For even a relatively early stage startup, raising money is the actual job description for a typical s

In order to win a star, Michelin has to produce a guide for the area. There are only three cities in the United States that have a guide (I believe: San Francisco, Chicago, and New York). So you won't find a michelin starred restaurant

That's a whole lot to infer from that. Holding a significant portion of the sale in escrow pending retention, legal requirements, and other issues is pretty standard practice.

You're correct. In modern browsers we have control over the history via the HTML 5 history API. Previously we used the hashtag to deal with state changes, which mostly worked (does allow pages to be bookmarked).

I'm struggling to remember how exactly I was taught, but cross-multiplying was the method I've used for as long as I can remember. I really believe it was how I was taught when we first encountered fractional division.

I completely agree.. HN is at it's best when it's inspiring, and this is a cool project that sheds light on a city that I'm guessing 95% of HN will never see. It's well done and highly interesting... I dig it.

I'd argue that for most, living in a suburb is in fact the worst of both worlds. You are neither rural nor city. You have none of the benefits and many of the drawbacks. For me my decision to live in the city is one of safety (driving
