I mostly agree with you, but I downvoted your comment because > We devoted an entire month of resources to this project and thought that was enough! ...is not just wildly inaccurate, but also disrespectful to the people who spent years w

It wouldn't have satisfied me either, I just wanted to counterbalance the idea that Google consistently demands 50 hour weeks.

As crazygringo guessed, I have a mortgage...and a few kids, and my wife is a SAHM. I live in a HCOL area. Google compensated me well and I could have spent $200 on a backpack if I specifically wanted it, but I don't spend $200 just on

I never had an experience like this in ten years at Google. If I ever felt done trying to get promoted, I'm confident I could have worked 25 hours a week and gotten "meets expectations" forever.

I don't care about t-shirts, but the best backpack I've ever owned was given to me when I worked at Google. I probably never would have bought a $200 hackpack on my own, but it's great.

A lot of companies have this role! EngProd at Google, Eng Efficiency at Roblox (let me know if you're interested), and I'm sure plenty of others as well.

I don't really feel like I know much about this, so someone may point out an obvious way in which I'm wrong, but: How do you measure the effects of the moral hazard created by the post-housing crisis bailouts circa 2008? Are majo

Pretty sure Google Meet lets you share your whole screen if you want. But probably not just a slice of it.

Google Meet works great! Doesn't require anything installed either, just works in-browser. I wish my employer used it instead of Zoom. Google uses it internally for all meetings, so it's probably not going anywhere either.

I recently joined Roblox, and the CEO will occasionally send emails with questions about caching strategy or API design or whatever. I found it a bit odd, coming from a much bigger company, but if that's what sounds good to you, we

I don't think this is why Google puts out mediocre products, FWIW. I think it's more that when something turns out after 6 months to be a bad idea, everyone's incentives are to spending another 12-18 months launching (or &quo

I don't think you read my comment very carefully, because I didn't say "huge effect" anywhere and I don't think I made any claims that could be construed as hyperbole. The only thing I said which expressed any magni

Among other flaws in this comment, like the assumption that Twitter has no indirect effects on people who aren't active Twitter users, or ignoring the fact that one of the candidates in the last election was a huge Twitter user, is the

I did this in an infosec class in undergrad 15 years ago, inspired by exactly this essay. The first part of the project was to write a program that password protected a file, and the second part was to try and break each other's progra

I disagree with this advice. At least in the US, I think it could easily be interpreted as anxious or rigid. Or even just make you seem too junior. Leaders need to be able to handle ambiguous meetings.

I don't know what's actually happening, but my interpretation of the cobra effect reference is that people are inventing new identities/affinities in order to be able to benefit from the systems which reward them.

It seems more like an incentive problem. I'd be interested to see what happens if you give the deciders X% of any unused budget as an EOY bonus.

I think you have a valid point, but I'm not sure it's made effectively, which I think is why you got downvotes. An example might help: Elon Musk is not, AFAIK, vegan. But he's done a lot to popularize electric cars, having fa

Prediction markets are an interesting alternative solution. If people can make money by correctly predicting the outcomes of experiments, and you have a way to prevent profit-driven bias impacting outcomes (e.g. independent experiment desig
