I don't think it takes a Nobel prize to realize that BitCoin, given its recent extreme volatility, currently makes for a poor medium of exchange. EDIT: This article is actually from 2013. Around the time Bitcoin went from ~10 to ~1000

This paper seems to assume life expectancy will increase indefinitely but this doesn't seem like it will happen due to the fact roughly 2/3 of people are overweight or obese.

Development has slowed down over the past year unfortunately. One of the most notable contributions recently was the addition of GSS API support. Overall the API is pretty small and easy to learn. The biggest advantage is that it takes care

SAS 4 is the works and should be finalized soon. It will supposedly have 22.5 Gbit/s (2.8 Gbyte/s) of bandwidth. Whether or not a HDD can actually saturate this is suspect.

Yup, If you're running unikernels in a VM for "improved performance" you're doing it wrong. Containers are a much better solution. Unfortunately people see containers now as a packaging mechanism rather than an alternati

ODB2 Bluetooth readers for Smartphones can be had for $10 [1]. I guess the hard part is writing the software that logs all the data. Currently most Android apps simply display the data and don't log it. The logging/software aspect

These are the first Intel HEDT chips to not have a soldered heat-spreader. Instead they are using thermal paste between the chip and the heat-spreader. This is generally accepted to be bad practice since they use cheap paste and it's d

I think the 2009 tag is really important here. The memory layout of Intel's chip has changed quite a bit since 2009. Core 2 chips didn't even have L3 cache at the time. The next article in this series talks about the Northbridge w

Definitely not since only 1 socket is usually directly attached to the PCIe bus. The best CPU for the money at the moment is most likely an i7 5830K with 40 PCIe lanes. Or you could wait (probably the best idea) for AMD to release it's

Just a warning to readers that MacLean's is fairly anti-french/Quebec so take this article with a grain of salt. It also glosses over the main issue which is streaming. If a group of children is smarter than their peers is it righ

I guess the real question is do these cost savings actually save them money in the long run? Considering they had to do all the extra engineering work. Or is this just to thumb the big manufactures? Just another case of NIH syndrome?

100G, probably not unless you are extremely wealthy and you have a burning desire to be destitute. 40G is definitely doable for a homelab. Used 40Gbe adapters are roughly $200 and DAC cables are < $100. QSPF+ Switches are much harder to

Infiniband RDMA is quite old yes but the Ethernet protocols are still rather new and they (iWarp & RoCE) are still competing for supremacy which doesn't really help adoption. At this point it looks like RoCE will win because Intel

This is why I'm really hoping RDMA [1] will catch on soon. It would be great if there was a cloud provider that would enable this feature on some of their offerings. Amazon has done something similar by allowing kernel bypass via DPDK
