I'm pretty sure they mean lie down for 30 minutes. I'll often only get a brief period of mental shut down on a 35 minute timer, but it helps a lot. Think of it as rebooting your machine :) Also, you can learn to fall asleep faster

I've been playing with it for about 5 years, started the local Haskell meetup, etc. I used it on a side project that reached beta in 2015, and on a startup at the beginning of 2016. Starting at the end of 2016 I started using it on a b

Absolutely true. You can learn a lot from contracting / consulting. Advancing one's career definitely doesn't mean working harder at one's current job or trying to get promoted. I'd recommend you try side gigs. Pick

Get to a level of skill and track record where it's easy to find companies willing to hire you. Then, when negotiating, give up significant salary to reduce your time commitment. It works better with smaller companies (Google, etc are

What I usually do in this case is redline the contract and sign it. (Meaning, edit the clauses you don't like in an obvious fashion. Tell them you've done this.) They will often not want to go to the trouble of going back and fort

I have a small contracting business. (2 employees) I spend some negotiating power on being able to choose what technology I use.

I like purescript a lot. But the elm community has won me over. It's well designed and productive.

When your team is composed of node developers. I would choose it over Python or Ruby, because Typescript and Flow are great type systems. Source: lead node dev / CTO since it came out. Currently using Haskell for all new projects.

This is why designing the interface in a language with a powerful type system provides the same quoted benefit of TDD. It helps you think about the interface before you move to implementation. In my experience, using a type system to do thi

My rule of thumb is wait to generalize something until it is repeated 3 times. If I try before I can't really know what the problem is. But if it's something that's repeated across projects, sure I tackle it right away, but t

Like we only now see how bad large OO systems can be? :D. Seriously though I think that people are becoming interested in FP because they see the limitations of their current tools. That's what happened for me anyway. Also I don't

They fixed the input lag a few releases ago. I switched from neovim two months ago and it can keep up with my mad keystrokes now. It still takes a while to launch, but that isn't as important to me as performance once it is running.

I just switched from Wealthfront to Betterment, because their software does a good job of helping you with this. It asks you what you're using the money for, when you'll need it, and about your tax situation. It'll automatica

I don't think this has anything to do with working harder. The startups are working on the weekend because they are succeeding, they aren't succeeding because they are working on the weekends. When you are in a startup that has fo

I can't speak for the parent, but that's about my target too. $1.3M / 300 (safe draw-down rate) = $4333/mo. Our family spends $4500 / mo in Salt Lake City to live comfortably. That doesn't include travel or exp

I've found this to be the case. While RethinkDB has many features to help you drill in to nested content, you'll end up missing document-level features fairly soon and want to split things up.

It hasn't been bad updating a codebase to keep up because of the type checker. It usually takes 30 minutes to an hour for a medium-sized project.

Evan wants to design Elm as thoughtfully as he can, and has been deliberately resisting community evolution. Eventually it will get too big and too useful, and he'll lose the ability to make big breaking changes easily. So he's tr

Bold move, but a good one, I think. I've been considering starting my students (just friends I mentor) on Elm for a while, but it's only this year I've heard of local companies hiring for Elm here in Salt Lake City.
