Never been to the US, but I never had the impression that Americans had more problems with alcohol than, say, Europe (if anything the stereotype goes the opposite way). A quick google search seems to point that Americans die more of alcohol

If the government is not comitted to the preservation of the Amazon, then there's really nothing that can be done. One could consider imposing international sanctions, but the chance of that backfiring would be quite high IMHO.

I can be proven wrong, but I don't think it's poor farmers who are responsible for the deforestation of the Amazon. It's mostly big latifund owners with lots of lobbying power.

Housing is not a free market because its supply is artificially restricted by zoning regulations meant to protect the value of current homeowners' properties.

Bokeh interactive tools are much nicer than matplotlib and its children. Also it has a js backend so you can more easily integrate into a website.

Voronoi diagrams work for any definition of `distance` that may suit your needs. So weighting by airport size and/or sea distance is pretty trivial.
