I was under the impression that the aero braking greatly reduces the amount of fuel required to land on mars vs the moon, and due to this the Saturn V had enough lift to put a crew on mars. If Apollo-era hardware can get to mars, why rendez

It isn’t clear to me. One is not a prerequisite for the other, they can be done independently. Am I missing something?

The fallacy here is that we don't need a Moon base to make a Mars base in terms of infrastructure. It won't make sense to launch a mission from the Moon to Mars until the Moon has Earth-equivalent industry, and refueling a rocket

He clearly implies that politically-driven contracts have made the launch system overly complex, and that SpaceX could do the job for a fraction of the cost with better results compared to the old aerospace giants. He paused on slide showin

The big picture is that instead of sending 16 moon-capable rockets to refuel one moon-capable rocket, just send 16 rockets to the moon. You can build a lot of infrastructure with 16 rockets to the moon.

Horizontally opposed engines are inherently less reliable due to the increase in components, an H-4 has two heads and all that entails, an I-4 has one. CVTs are inherently more fragile than a geared transmission, they simply cannot hold as

It's absolutely incredible how Subaru can be so high on this list with their choice of engine style and transmission. With that sort of handicap it's either a testament to how great Subaru is or how terrible every other automaker

The existing sample return mission to mars is already getting budgetary pushback. I am willing to wager a human mission will not receive the same pushback, even if it's 10x the price. The human angle here cannot be ignored.

Apollo 17 brought back 200 pounds of lunar material, including the deepest core samples we have of a planetary body, but you characterize that as “souvenirs”. Name a robotic mission that has brought back more than 200 pounds of “souvenirs”

The curiosity rover took about 4 years to cover 10 miles. The Apollo 17 rover covered 20 miles in 4 hours. Ego and the human spirit aside, humans are better at exploring than robots, even with 50 years of advances in robotics.
