I’ve been warily watching this grow in my own life. At first it was just some podcasts in the background while working. Then it became all kinds of videos. Then it became while taking breaks, preparing food, eating food, using the bathroom,

This is all about inflation, not housing. Housing is just going to get caught in the crossfire. If you have a low mortgage, hang onto that! Otherwise standard advice applies, try to keep at least 6 months expenses in cash or cash equivalent

Brad Fitz (previously from the golang team, now he has his own venture) asked it how to dispose of a body, which it wasn’t willing to answer. But he discovered if you ask it how to dispose of a bag of potatoes, it gets more helpful: As I me

I agree that you should choose family, but I disagree that it’s nonsense. It’s a simple tradeoff of money/success versus what actually matters. Assuming there isn’t some win-win compromise being overlooked. Usually there’s no free lunc

Or the longer we do ineffective things instead of tackling the low hanging fruit, the harder the problem will be.

That’s not sufficient either, but it’s THE logical starting point. I feel like our politicians are too inept to deal with the issue of climate change. We need an engineering mindset.

I think the principal reason is the browser now has sufficient features, broadly deployed, that we swung back towards thick client architectures. So the frontend gets more complex because it’s doing more. It’s not the first time in the hist

The browser is powerful enough now that one could replicate this if one wanted to. I don’t think it’s the pinnacle of software development, but it had some advantages.

There are no syscalls or equivalent operating system calls in the code paths measured. The architecture is also independent of the operating system, with exceptions in some languages for the calling convention (not in rust, afaik, or at lea

For this code, the compiler inlined the call. So there should be no difference between pass by copy or pass by reference, which is what was measured. Where it could matter is when the code isn’t inlined. But with small structs it might not

That’s galvanic corrosion, but it’s usually an issue in water. I don’t know that it would be a problem with refrigerants, likely not.

First off, I was upfront about my ignorance. Secondly, copper is way more expensive than stainless steel, unless I’m missing something. More than 8x according to random websites on Google. I’m sure there is a reason copper is used, but if t

If they’re using copper, changing materials would probably save money. Copper is comparatively expensive. I suspect your premise that they are using mostly copper is incorrect, but then I write software for a living, what do I know.

I’ve been using GitHub copilot for six months now. It definitely produces a lot of code that looks right, but isn’t. I review anything it produces carefully. I’ve introduced one bug to production where I can say that was likely from copilot

It depends what you’d substitute into your diet instead. Meta studies I’ve seen show lower mortality for people consuming cheese, butter, yogurt, sour cream, etc. Which suggests to me that the average person chooses worse substitutions. I

Plant based “milks” are seriously lacking nutritionally compared to dairy. You don’t need a study for that, reading the back of the carton will do. Almond milk, especially, is flavored water. Still, I agree about the inconsistency you point
