Did the same in thing in college but with Toki Pona. Think Esperanto but even more stripped down to under 200 words that you combine to express ideas. If you work hard at it, you can reach an intermediate level over a weekend. My roommates

Even though it is not explicitly suggested by the article I would imagine that the phone maintains its emergency contact features as well as any data in storage to transfer later. The idea is to discourage someone from using their phone as
