My guess is that it will use some form of e-ink. Once set, they don't draw power and would only need to refresh a bit to reset it to something else like "stolen" etc... But of course, there would be bootleg ones pretty soon.

They're not completely gone. I think "Blogroll" filled that void for a bit, before that too was taken over by ads. The next step was public bookmark sharing, like Stumbleupon or Delicious. Still, those services feel a bit ste

That depends on your definition of "Web". If you mean the proliferation of watering holes (including this one), then the old web is dying. I've seen a few new nuggets of gold on NeoCities, but people's proclivities towar

That's thoroughly depressing. The Page and Brin quote is interesting. I searched for it and got the original paper (back when it was called "Backrub"). The relevant quote is in Appendix A: http://infolab.stanford.

If the shakedown theory is true, and I'm not sure that it is, that's an order of magnitude beyond the evil threshold. One plus though, businesses still have the option of engaging their local community which may have a stronger ef

Wow, Thanks folks! Looks like DO is earning their keep. I'm planning to move a forum off a shared host, so VPS was the first place I looked. They were recommended to me, but I only had one other first hand account of them until now.

Well, it reflects well on Google that they say this, but in the end, the only "truly secure" host is one that cannot decrypt your data even when compelled to do so. Bottom line is, if a capability exists, it can be exercised, wi

Is this really still the case? Granted, it's been a while since I went shopping for hosts, but I thought these days more and more hosts (even cheap ones) at least support 5.3+ if not 5.4. PHP got a huge swath of improvements in these r

I think it does. BTW, Teensy 3.0 just recently came out : http://www.pjrc.com/store/teensy3.html It's only slightly bigger than the 2.0, but you get 3 more PWM pins (10 total) and 34 I/O and 3.3V out.

Death by a thousand cuts is still a death (and a slow and painful one at that). I'm hopeful that this is just the kick in the pants the project needs to get its act together. It's unquestionably gotten better in recent years, but

I agree with the side note ;) Coincidentally, you probably could use Nginx as a rudimentary database at least since it can be extended with Lua. You can probably make it function as a database proper by using OpenResty. In fact, there are q

That's one of the points. The other being offloading the burden of serving common components off-site. This, I think, specializes in just off-site availability.
