I think cheaper QLC chips use a part of their storage space as SLC, which is fast to write. But once you’ve written the fast part that fits in the SLC cache write throughput quickly tanks as it has to push the data further in to the slower

If moving off the cloud was easy we’d all be doing it. For our org the risk is (unfortunately imo) bigger than the savings. I would love to pay hetzner dedicated boxes rates for compute but the amount of work to migrate everything would be

TS requires you to specify a time column in each hypertable or view (continuous aggregate) where you want it to work its magic. It then stores an internal watermark that it compares to the time column in the table to figure out from where t

Another alternative to timescale could be hydra. Haven’t tried it myself but the promise of columnar tables seems wildly useful.

I ran into issues with TS too. Main issue I recall now was maintaining a grand total count of events that were already rolled up into daily counts was not fast since it always looked back at all the data. There was no way in the ts patterns

No need for that. I didn’t know Clickhouse was now disconnected from the Russian government.

Yeah. I’d love to use clickhouse but yandex ties to the russian government makes me not want to.

Big congrats on 1.0! Super exciting project. My dream scenario would be installing hydra as an extension into my main rails application database. My usecase is showing analytics numbers directly to users, like "how many people visited

The nice thing about index bloat is REINDEX has a CONCURRENTLY option, no need to block writes.

Ive stuck with sublime text because it feels good when I use it, everything is fast and there is no clutter. For lack of a better comparison it feels like when you had just reinstalled windows XP back in the day. Fresh and snappy and clean.

Ah yes that makes sense. It’s easy to forget how slow HDDs used to be and their mechanical nature of spinning disk and a head.

I spent last week freeing up 200GB from our 600GB db with just reindex and pg_repack. The worst offender was a 17GB (of data) table that had 142GB of indexes. Reindex took it down to 21GB. The table indexing is crazy and has multiple indexe

There are two types of devs at my job, those that care about shipping lots of new things fast, using new frameworks and pushing metrics. Then we have me and a few others fighting fires that the fast shippers leave behind. I’m fine with it,
