It not just you. Skype was founded by the people that also founded KaZaA and they (obviously) took the technology/knowledge they already had, modified it and applied to a different purpose.

It looks like a 'search' key actually. Look closely at the fourth screenshot. Not sure if I'm right, though.

It depends a lot on the use case of your application. The size of the task, the amount of return use, etc. For one-off, low usage apps a web app can be the better choice. Also, it depends on how good you want the app to look and behave. Wit

That's not the point. These are the kind of projects programmers do for fun. Your comments is like saying "if this guy didn't go the zoo, but rather spent his day at work, he at least might have been productive". Now, I can imagine you woul

With the first child on the way (very soon now), I have been 'practicing' taking evenings and weekends off for a couple of months now. At first you might think you won't have enough time but it already taught me the difference between bein

They're a company so their goal is (among other things) to make money which they do (among other things) by charging for premium membership. Assuming there's a business case for this (very cool) tool, the question is: will they make more m

It's annoying anyway because the button says 'Draw Now' I expect to 'Dive In' (as the subtext says). Instead, I have to fill in a obnoxiously long form, verify my email address, and go to the URL again. That's a strange definition of 'Now

Love the idea. Too bad that I'm not in the UK. If you'd made a (very similar) Android app as well, you could have tested if the use of a certain mobile OS makes a significant difference in happiness ;)

There's STIKK ( http://www.stikk.nl ), and a bunch of Ruby/Python/Haskell/JavaScript meetups. What's maybe lacking are a couple of big companies that buy/invest in smaller ones (e.g., like Nokia in Berlin).

I like Objective-C's solution, where one can just send messages to nil. The practical result when writing code is pretty close to using the Maybe monad applicatively (i.e., write your code like the value is never nil, only check for nil whe

Same here. I like having multiple projects active at the same time, mostly because of the 'switch when stuck' possibility, but also just to give my brain some time _not_ to think about the project. I think I'll go crazy if I had just a si

That problem will not go away, instead you'll have a new one: "Okay, is this abandoned and did the owner forget to mark it as such?"

MRI is very useful to look inside things you _can't_ cut open, like, say, the head of a living human being. If you think this is spectacular, you should try spending more time in the kitchen. You'll see color too!

In my experience (as an iOS app developer) people overestimate the returns they'll get from being listed in the app store. It might make sense for big brands because people might search for them, but smaller brands will not be more visible

How the brief was written scared me a little, but 37Signals charges a pretty decent amount to post a listing so I figured it was all going to be kosher. So, the question here is: why didn't you trust your gut feeling? Why did you value yo

My phone simply forgot the mobile internet configuration after the upgrade. Annoying, but (probably) pretty easy to look up on your carrier's website.

I'm sure this sounds disappointing, but basically there's nothing you can do other than start. There are several ways to trick yourself into starting, though. Some random ones: * Break big tasks into small pieces, make a list. * Visualize

In that light, the TED presentation from a couple of years ago is also interesting: http://www.ted.com/talks/anand_agarawala_demos_his_bumptop_d... At least it seemed very entertaining to the TED crowd, they're mostly laughing.

In theory though, it should be much easier to fix a couple of crashes than to increase the performance of JS + canvas, say, an order of magnitude.

I stand corrected. There are some edge cases though. Here's a case (from the same site) what can happen (again, in Dutch): http://blog.iusmentis.com/2008/03/08/in-eigen-tijd-gemaakte-...

Hmm, all the work you would do in your 'own time' would be owned (copyright-wise) by your employer then anyway, unless you'd explicitly excluded that in your contract. This is tricky part of the (Dutch) law, where the all work you do owned
