I wasn't saying they were attacking it because it is 50 years old, I said it's easy to attack something that is 50 years old. Computer science and systems design has evolved a lot since then, so of course there were a lot of d

I remember when this was new and I've never found it as amusing as other people seem to. It's super easy to shit on software that's almost 50 years old. But where's the replacement? Windows is still worse as a web server

This is an absolute garbage tier article. What on earth is it doing on the HN front page? The author has no clue what he's talking about (and admits it several times) and makes many logical leaps (one time the author said Gnome should

To me this is like asking how do we crack the littering problem from tourists on Olympus Mons? I still think we are really far from this. Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant aren't anywhere near good enough to replace a human assistant. S

Err I have had my 15" rMBP and have never needed a dongle. It supports thunderbolt/displayport and HDMI. I can connect not only to multiple monitors easily without dongles, I can connect to TVs. The all USB-C design of the new Pro

My approach is not ad hoc. I have refined my questions and technique over a decade of conducting interviews and much more being on the other end of them. Let me be clear; it's what works best for me. It may not work best for everyone.

Asking developers to program in front of strangers is primarily testing for ability to perform in front of strangers and developer skills secondarily (if at all.) I never ask people to code in front of me. I ask them questions to get a feel

With how unhappy you are in your job the lack of motivation is no mystery. You should find another job or found a startup or if you think it will be useful to what you want to do, sure get a degree. I would caution though that usually when

Bravo to Mitch and Freada Kapor for going out on a limb like this. Uber has been toxic for years and everyone has remained silent. Every PR crisis has been swept under the rug and nothing has apparently changed. Hopefully an investor speaki

That's the whole point of the letter, the investigation being conducted is a bunch of insiders with vested interest in protecting Uber. It's baloney.

I think this open letter gives a very clear recommendation; have a truly independent investigation that leads to recommendations for change.

HuffPo should be disqualified as a source regarding Uber. As stated in the NYT piece, Arianna Huffington is on Uber's board. She has a clear interest in shining as positive a light as possible on Uber at all times.

While the initial cost of EVs is higher the idea that you have to buy new batteries every 4-5 years is completely wrong. There are LEAFs with over 100k miles on their original batteries still running strong.

Having owned a Nissan LEAF for the last 2.5 years has been really great. Maintenance is almost nothing, the battery has held up fantastic and the car is a real pleasure to drive. Never having to stop for gas or get oil changes sounds like n

This seems like an issue with out of date examples. This same criticism could be leveled against any language that evolves and invalidates past syntax. PHP7 invalidates tons of old examples on the web. Does that mean those changes were bad

Would you say there are chefs and non-chefs? Or just people who have different levels of various skills? Musicians and non-musicians? Ballerinas and non-ballerinas? Of course there are. Yes where you draw the line is somewhat arbitrary and

Land was a lot more plentiful in 1950, especially near urban centers. The population has also increased drastically. Inflation alone is not enough to do a reasonable extrapolation of what houses should cost today.

Not all pure bred dogs have health problems. If you take the time to find a breeder who cares about the dogs more than money then you can find dogs that are healthy and well cared for. This takes effort though and research.
