So if someone else makes a browser off Gecko, then that one can satisfy Google's requirements, minus the special agreements Mozilla makes for search data, and suddenly there is mo reason for Google to pay Mozilla any more..

Isn't that the point? Making the engine decoupled and embeddable just wasn't on Mozilla's radar, and it suffered as a consequence. Chrome team was advcied very early in their development by none other than Android team to go

Historically, Firefox has been the only moneymaker for Mozilla. It is possible they didn't want to make it easy to embed so anyone can create second FF on top of their work and compete without paying dues. Electron and single applicati

I once read on HN that Apple gets ARM ISA and designs for free by virtue of being a founder. So the closed proprietary nature isn't enough for them to move to RISC V. I'm not sure that's true though..

AppImage is very good, I agree, but it has its fallings too. It also has external runtime dependencies that make it a pain to package and use on NixOS.

Apologies if this comes off rude, but GTK has increasingly becoming Gnome Toolkit, and notion of it on other platforms/DEs gets hand waived away. It may suit some people's taste, it is more open than Qt in some aspects and it has

That means losing out exclusivity on endless remakes, reboots and sequels. Since that's the majority of Hollywood money, I sincerely doubt it will change.

By core products, you mean Search, Gmail and YouTube? Let's see.. Search these days seems to have given up on SEO blocking, Gmail has given up on any kind of UX improvements, and YouTube has given up on being a decent platform for eith

Your comment made me chuckle. Back in 2008 Chrome was the breath of fresh air, with absolutely spartan look, total lack of extensions and amazing speed, while IE was the opposite. There was good reason for its initial popularity. And now, l

Agreed, but the scale makes all the difference. What few million farmers were doing manually is now being done by same number of of people (approximating, but could be wrong) using massive industrial scale machinery. Quick google-fu is fail

The modern agriculture just means automating depleting natural aquifers and using up topsoil and abusing chemicals at massive scale. Its the agricultural equivalent of optimizing for next quarter, but losing out on next decade.

IME this very much depends on router and devices. When I was syncing over mobile hotspot (LAN) on 2.4GHz, speeds weren't impressive. But then I got a 5GHz router with 3 devices and there is sufficient bandwidth. I share ~120GB of total
