If FreeBSD were as popular as Linux, it would have same problem. We don't even need hypotheticals, how many proprietor Unices were there before Linux? Forget history, how many libre Unices are there now? Off the top of my head I can count Free/Net/Open/Dragonfly BSD and may be missing one or two. Only difference is Linux provides a-la-carte experience, while BSDs provide the bundled options. But zoomed out, none bloat doesn't appear to me as an issue in choice/decision making department.
