I agree, I feel all the time I spended learning Django, Scala/Play, Go, Haskell, etc. is worthless because startups only hire Rails and iOS guys anyways.

I still use a 1280x800 18" laptop, I really need a new one. Now the thing is: This Chromebook will probably run... Chrome, and I can't work just with Chrome. I wish Google had developed a Linux Distro instead of ChromeOS, would be much more

KDE 5.0 would be a major release: I doubt they are looking into that now.

I'd say you should take a look at research papers for those topics: But it's true, we are lacking advanced Haskell books.

But developing OpenSource software in Windows is still a pain: You still need Make, GCC, Autotools, etc. etc. and even if you can install Cygwin it's messy as hell. And powershell sucks, we don't need another shell: we have been using Bash

I read somewhere (Can't remember) but a Torque developer said that they are looking to open-source Torque2D.

Well you have Go, D and Haskell: And Scala, Clojure, Erlang if you count VM languages.

I'm interested in Erlang, have read a lot of good things about it lately. However I've not tried it yet because I don't see how it is going to help me... I already know some functional programming (Scala, Haskell) and I don't work with larg

That really depends on what's exactly your "Hobby". I'm a hobbyist myself, but I'd like to study Computer Science (I actually like the SCIENCE in computing.) and become a Software Developer. But I'm not in College yet, so I'm a "hobbyist",

You can maybe start with a Scheme parser, it's quite simple.

Great! Just two suggestions. 1) It's been a week or more since Lecture 1, it's complicated to keep track of what I've learned if I can't watch the next lecture for 1 or 2 weeks. 2) Having to open the console to watch the notes is really

Wow just what I needed! As a Desktop/Systems developer I find it hard to integrate all the HTML - CSS - JS - Python and then deploy a Web Application, I've been taking a look at the Django Book but it kinds of assumes you know Web Developme

I used to loathe Java and love C#... but I was a die-hard Linux user and I couldn't get in the MS train. But then I found Scala... heh... screw C#.

Sure: In the "hacker" world it seems that people prefer Haskell (Purely functional, native code) to Scala (OO Hybrid, JVM). However I'd say that Scala is far more popular for building bussiness/real software than Haskell is (Twitter for exa

If all people started writing code with more RAII and Smart Pointers this would be a better world. Talking about C, well... it's unsafe by nature, let's face it.

Go is a language for those who love the simple C/UNIX approach but would rather have a Garbage Collector there. I'd like Go to have manual memory management: But Google decided it was better this way. I don't really see it as a replacement

My number one tip is "Don't give a about what people tell you in the internet". Seriously, you'll get confused with so many holy wars... "Don't use C++, use C!", "No! C++ is safer", etc. etc. ... just pick a language and use it, if you

So he discourages Getters/Setters and instead says that declaring the variable as Public is better? I mean, isn't that like not giving a sh-- about encapsulation principles ?

What is the point of having more OS if even Linux isn't well supported by driver suppliers or software developers? Just to have more fragmentation? Sure, I love the idea of Plan9, I love small OS like MINIX and revolutionary UI ideas... but
