I'd also like to add that your "Cache Missing for Fun and Profit"[1] paper is an excellent read for people who are just getting into Timing Side channels. It's both so crazy (yet so believable) to me that it wasn't

This isn't necessarily a direct reply but instead another anecdote which reinforces OP's claim that asynchronous programming is a thorn in the side of Python. I was tasked with improving a performance-critical object detection cod

Personally, I would argue that David Silver's body of work at DeepMind is making a very strong case in favor of "simple reward + lots of compute". Richard Sutton wrote about this back in 2019 as The Bitter Lesson[1]. An impor

I hadn't heard news on s&box for a long time. When I saw the poker video, I audibly laughed out loud. If s&box can be a less exploitative, and more adult-oriented version of Roblox, I think they're onto something wonderful

Potentially in this case, the fact that you interpreted the self-therapy as potential advice is a testament to the author's ability to write, at the very least. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive, not that you claimed fo

Something like this would look amazing on Scryfall or Gatherer. I'm not sure how you'd go about selling this to them, but I think the Magic: the Gathering world would be better off for it.

High resolutions like UHD require really high bitrates when encoded with H264, because H264 wasn't designed with such high resolutions in mind. HEVC/H265 improves upon its predecessor in this regard, so Netflix's edge hardwar

I think if you take "grit" to mean "discipline", it goes a long way. In my opinion, it's better think of school grades as a measure of efficacy instead of intelligence. Given a fixed amount of time, how correctly co

Absolutely blows my mind that they wouldn't have a keybind for swapping between "stages" in Stage Manager. What furthers the confusion is that they did put some keybinds for things like merging applications into a single stag

I think if you'd like a sample of what the author of the post is referring to, go checkout the Hemingway text editor[1]. It's very simple, and as far as I know makes no use of the advanced language models that have been in vogue f

Yes! But it depends what you want to get out of it. I'm a big proponent of project-based learning, so my question to you is: what would you want to build? I'll lead with an example: I really like the idea of search indexes and sea

This looks like it'll be a gamechanger for older games who are interested in buying visual masters of games from their nostalgic years. As a Mount & Blade fan, it's seeing the game lined up against Skyrim and Morrowind is a bi

I think it's been decided that such a change was so large that it would require a major version change in Python. However, I think that was unauthoritative hearsay probably in another comment thread here on HN. But it stands to reason

It is really unfortunate that AVX-512 has been such a mess when it came to support from Intel on their newer hardware platforms. I think Dr. Lemire has gone quite a ways in demonstrating that there's a lot of potential for software to

So, I actually thought the opposite: the growth in userbase that most big tech companies have seen over the 2010s probably meant the "death" of people creating queries á la AltaVista. But it turns out, I think I'm wrong, Goog

One of the main value adds of an open ISA + open reference implementations Chisel/Chipyard + access to RTL (I think?) is that LOTS of people are hungry for really good multi-core out-of-order CPU pipelines with super-stringent levels

I agree with the sentiment that justifying your existence every 24 hours isn't an effective use of anyone's time. Perhaps "standup" wasn't the right word. But in general, verbal communication/meetings/etc.

Is it just me, or is Golang's concurrency a very double edged sword? My exposure to goroutines and channels was mind-blowing, but I still really struggle reading through Go code and understanding what's going on in memory. The way
