Yes, many things do become ends unto themselves. This is why I read only the occasional life hack , or life pro tip . It's become a fetish. It's less about optimizing your life than being able to say that you're a lifehacke

Perhaps I should have been more explicit than trying to imply with "interesting personal projects". Too often IRL and in communities like this I come across people who are obviously wistful that the apparent "correct one-size

You did mention choice(s), and I went off on my own with my silly metaphor. And your point about a continuum is good. It's certainly not a binary choice.

There's a major point in this article that not many commenters seem to be picking up on: there's a fork in the road of careers. To one side is a multilane highway over fairly level ground leading straigh to predictable suburbia. T

I don't feel these semantic distinctions are as distinct as all that. And they're not the same for everyone. I had a coworker who reported distinct euphoria from over-the-counter Motrin. So, semantics aside... I have two daughters

The better market opportunity would be SE that figured out a way to serve their customer base better. Splintering isn't always the best answer. For instance, the very valid "meta is murder" ideas lead SE to ban meta, and the

Yeah, I think it's a nice solution but it only works in very narrow circumstances. Once I was given a much smaller, unpaid task as part of the interview process. It wasn't a puzzle or trick, but something actually useful. All told

I signed up with Voicestream, later bought by T-Mobile. I've been with them more than a decade. A couple of times they've called to inform me I need to switch plans because they're phasing out the one I was on. It's been a total win, no ext

I don't personally know Gates, and I doubt I ever will. If all I have to go by are his deeds (and that's the case), then he's done a lot of good. He could have bought himself huge truckloads of goodwill, much easier than some of the things

What's up with HN lately? It seems like being contrary to contrarian is the new thing these days. Bill Gates is someone I admired at first, because he built something huge from humble beginnings. Then I reviled him for the damage I saw him

From the title I was expecting to disagree, but this isn't about "not having" the meetings, it's about taking them offline. I think I agree with this. I should have done this at my previous job. The devs had flexible schedules (which I supp

As someone not previously involved in this thread, it doesn't read that way to me. Abuse is one of many areas where there's a tendency for pretty much everyone to keep quiet, even third parties who see the signs. That's why organizations tr
