Is there any way to get a feed of just the magazines? I don't really have any use or interest in a feed of their books, but I'd love having the new magazine just show up in my RSS reader.

I'm not so sure - I think having 3rd party apps at all is a concession from Jobs. ISTR (but don't have any references, so this could be an urban legend) that his original vision for the Mac included buying all software from Apple, and mak

They don't enforce .msi any more than debian (or ubuntu) enforce .debs. The lack of centralization just means almost nobody bothers to use msi and just rolls their own self-extracting archive.

The point as I see it is to get developers moving away from the platform, and buying other phones because there is no app-store-draconianism and saying that when they get the phone. Voting with dollars and making it painfully clear why

For feature branches, I've seen meaningful uses of named branches, but as a devout Mercurial user, I actually agree that git's "lightweight tag" model of branching feels a little more useful. Hopefully soon hg's bookmarks will be push/pull'

The analogy to sports actually reminds me a great deal of embouchure dystonia, which afflicts musicians that play winds (both brass and wood). Nobody really knows what the root cause is, but many players simply stop playing when it hits in

Yes, they're highly overblown - I just made it through the hiring meatgrinder this week and I have a non-CS degree from a tiny liberal arts college. It was a nonissue. Plus, two years ago, they hired me as an intern after reading my resum

editline is intended to be API compatible, and has weakened the argument that linking implies work-derivation at least somewhat. As far as I know, nobody has ever been willing to test that theory in court since they'd lose so much political

Yeah, the older (pre-LED backlighting) MBPs have a limit of 3 gigs. You can give it a 4th gig, but the system just ignores it.

This already exists - if you call your own GV # from one of the lines registered in it and require a PIN to login, you can place calls via a touchtone interface. I hear there's an Android app that streamlines the process.

I'm really glad that Palm is making the tarballs available without requiring some stupid developer login on yet another site - a lot of places could learn from this good example. Hopefully they do a better job of maintaining their developer

The use of git at Google is (AFAIK, IANAG) limited to checking out the revisions of a limited portion of the tree. Kind of like using git-svn to track just part of a repository and managing most of the checkout using bare svn.

You say that "Subversion was not that great of an idea" but if you go back to 2001 (which is when svn became selfhosting), or even 2004, CVS was such a disaster for some use cases that the need for a replacement was readily evident. Add t

Another secondary thing that's very convenient for me is that I can make many small changes and push them all at once when I'm happy with them--because they're small they're easier to review. But this is a workflow issue, it's not that one

Personally, I was curious. Why doesn't a distinction need to be made between a random salt and the same salt used every time? Don't they have dramatically different results in terms of security? And yeah, his choice of MD5 is an abomination

Is his salt even really a salt? I thought salts had to be different every time to actually meaningfully prevent precomputing a dictionary.

I've been able to make do without a whiteboard at my current job by keeping tons of scratch paper around. I'm given lots of 1-sided printouts I never need, so I just throw them in a drawer for when I need to sketch something.

ISTR that the "rule of thumb" is that the NSA is a couple of years ahead of the mainstream for both Mathematics and computer tech. I don't know how valid that is, but it probably is a decent baseline for paranoia.

That's true, but I made that statement about XML parsing based on my own life experience: I love working on version control tools, I'd work on them even if nobody else used them. They have this internal beauty to me, but most people have
