Having been in the "real world" for a while (graduated college recently), it's been striking to me just how many people in the world aren't self-motivated. My memory of the Googlers I've worked with suggests that Google tends to end up with

People store their home dir with hg too (I do, many coworkers do), and before the DVCS era people used svn and cvs. This is far from a git-unique thing.

A good basic summary of this would be "don't use anything other than basic ASCII in filenames." There are two very common desktop platforms (OS X, Windows) that have outright broken filename handling (OS X in particular has really odd rules

My read on Apple is that they're not a software company - they're a hardware design company that feels passionately about the software not sucking and detracting from the design of the hardware. Last time I knew, Apple's turnover on engin

Based on their white paper on MTBF of hard disks, I'd guess that they avoid favoring any single vendor to lower the chance of a bad batch of drives all failing at once.

I've not seen that to be the case - in fact, from what my friends have told me, they're doing only replacement hiring right now.

Not really. I've looked at the ctypes bindings (I've got a set of incomplete patches to them), and they lack diff and replay support, which makes them basically useless for building a client. Git uses the perl bindings, so I can't speak t

Actually, the less talented a team is, the more important I'd say VCS would be. Idiots is one thing - but mediocre programmers I'd love to have on VCS of any kind (VCS in my mind excludes things like VSS). It means that when someone blo

For several reasons, I'd say so. Using the cell modem really tears through battery life. Also, there are plenty of places in the Chicago area I've noticed where coverage is spotty enough to not have reliable data. Then there's plane flights

It's already cool to me as a potential non-worthless editor in a CMS for quick fixes (sometimes I have to write complex JS that lives in a CMS, and I inevitably end up with a copy-paste-save-refresh cycle that gets tedious once I need emacs

In the case of sites that refer to user-specified images by just linking to the image (as with some forum software, at least a couple of years ago last I used such things), they need to change behavior, otherwise the upstream site can chang
