I'm not an evolutionary biologist. I merely want to pass on his comment. He studied the viral genome segments inserted in human genome. I can pass that question to him if you want.

My colleague, an evolutionary biologist's comment on this: the virus is unlikely to prevail if manually tweaked since evolution does such an amazing job that it's very unlikely it alone could dominate and infect large populations.

We were not educated enough about this particular history in China but when I grew up I read a bit to know most of it. But I'm shocked it wasn't well known internationally. I find the same situation in Ireland complicated as well

Well there is more nuance than that. Firstly the feedback may not seem similar in appearance to western democracies (demonstration / public statement etc), but there are lots of protests (many violent) hence the vast monitoring system.

I'm certainly no expert but I do enjoy this genre. 東野圭吾 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keigo_Higashino is the latest author I read about who has won Edogawa Rampo Prize. His writing has a typical feel of the eerines

I think effect size is a very useful tool if you know some odds a priori. E.g if you can compare the effect size with some known features/variables. It can then give you a rough feeling how true it might be. If the features are small a
