Just to be clear, the ISA is open source. The design or implementation does not have to be.

Funny that you should mention this. I just hit that problem yesterday. The lack of a binary type is a problem. This is the same thing that hit XML. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the best solution is still the MIME stuff.

Yeah, those sentences are too close together. I'm trying to elicit more of a response from the comment author. I think they make some good points. I would like to learn more about their ideal system.

What about JSON vs protobufs? Is there a schemaless system that you use?

If there isn’t a performance hit, and you get all the benefits (especially atomicity), this seems like a nice, easy win. I will tinker with SquashFS today. Thanks for writing this up.

So is there any performance hit or gain when using SquashFS? I wonder why all the container folks aren’t using this.

They are trying to be big and small. When the Intel dropped its barrel shifter, they caught a lot of hell for the massive performance hit. They promptly re-included it in processors following the P4.

So here is an interesting question... why do I (and many others) like vi so much? Maybe modes are bad for beginners, but really good for experts.

Thanks for that write up. Is there a decent reference or tutorial for ‘k’ online that you would recommend? I would like to learn more about it’s semantics. For example, the views concept and how old versions of a view/var? Are availabl

I agree UEFI is the way to go. Just curious, how do people debug their programs though? Older non-pc systems had really decent debuggers built in.

Totally agree. Tried this on an Oculus GO. Didn’t work well. Not enough resolution and the dev envy leaves a lot to be desired.

Oh man thanks for posting this. After seeing a few APL references in comments today, it reminded me to go look for this exact book by Ken Iversen. Lo and behold, I just sit down to peruse HN.... And this link is right above the fold. Sweet.

So glad Yosef keeps writing on his blog. This is a well articulated gem. I had intuition as to why the monorepo style was not great for most shops. His clever argument nails it.

Yeah - there is a counter intuitive thing happening when dealing with tech. The technology in the Pi (any of them) is super high. The technology of the case, heat sinks, power, etc... is much much lower. I have this aversion to paying the s

Wow - cool example of live kernel debugging. It is very cool that the kernel is still usable while this issue occurred. Also lucky that someone was logged into the zone without a /proc dependency. Usually people have complex shell prom

Yeah - I wish I didn’t have to go threadripper to get ECC. I don’t need that much power.
