I have a PhD in physics, though not particle physics. QFT was required, since the methods appear all over in condensed matter physics. Unfortunately, there is no real shortcut to being able to understand those terms except by studying one o

When I was a wee undergrad, a grad student office-mate had printed out these equations and posted them on the office door. He wrote on it: The simplicity of the Standard Model. Or words to that effect; this was in the condensed matter physi

I learnt it in high school on a counterfeit Apple ][ with an 80-column display card. (Maybe it ran CP/M? My memory is hazy.) I had to type up the school's Prize-Giving Day program. When I got to college (late 1980s) and got my fir

It started with Gopher, IIRC: "Surf the Internet." I recall having a GIF of the gopher mascot with those words.[0] It was sometime between 1992 and 1995; I'm fairly sure it was before Netscape. The Jargon File[1] doesn't

Granted, I'm a mostly self-taught programmer, but I would have thought that if something appears in formal logic,[0] it should have an analog in a programming language. Even standard algorithms like quicksort[1] use conditionals. And,
