I went to Stanford for my Masters in CS in the late 80's. I encountered several folks who were there on a fellowship from Bell Labs. None of them had any intention on returning the New Jersey after they completed their degrees. I can

Reasoning??? Since when to LLMs reason. The word "reasoning" has become almost worthless in modern computer science due to misuse.

This is a bit of glib answer. Most of the time is spent coding which encompasses typing, retyping, and retyping again. It also includes banging your head against the wall while trying to get one of your rewrites to work against and under-

Look at the Fed published employment numbers. Over 80% of new CS grads find employment in their field. That would be 0 if we were hiring none. We are still hiring juniors where I work.

This seems to be an advertisement for Private Captcha. I don't know a lot about the service, but it seems inherently ablest. Does proof of work, support blind users? Does it is support special needs users with cognitive impairments?

Yes it is a net exporter of oil, but not oil for gasoline. The use is a net importer of oil used for gasoline. That's because oil companies have chosen to not make the investments needed to refine domestic oil. We have to import for

People in LA need to breathe during the summer time. So yes we demand a blend that protects our residents. And the refiners are choosing to close refineries. They are not being compelled.

You can absolutely capture the value of your additional productivity. Strike out on your own. Start your own company or consulting firm. That has always been the answer. Why would you think it would be any different now?

It sounds like the author shouldn't be in tech. For many, perhaps most of us programming is joy. It's why we started in our teens and have continued for 40 years. This is just a cynical post that adds no new value. We didn

And how exactly will someone do that. Many of the people living in the impacted area are below the poverty line and living paycheck to paycheck at best. How are they supposed to put together funds to relocate. Especially if their propert

"Slop" means low effort/low accountability. It is independent of the tools used in development.

The more I sit with this the more this seems like a rationalization. Being a good contributor is a human quality, not a quality of the tools that you use. Are you thoughtful? Do you place the needs of the project above your own? Are you

In the US, bikes == cars. They are required to follow the same rules. I don’t find them nonsensical.

Bike lanes with curbs aren’t great. On garbage days trash cans often get parked in the bike lane and cyclists have no way of going around since the curb block their way. I’m perfectly comfortable with just lines for bike lanes.

Do you think that there has been technologic advancement in coding in the last 40 years? Programming languages and “paradigms” are crutches to help humans attempt to handle complexity. They are affordances, not a property of nature.

I can dive into the source code of LLM generated code too. Indeed it is better because you have tools to document it better than a library that you use.

Why would that necessarily happen? With an LLM you have perfect knowledge of the code. At any time you can understand any part of your code by simply asking the LLM to explain it. It is one of the super powers of the tools. They also acc

In what world to developers “understand” pieces like React, Pandas, or Cuda? Developers only have a superficial understanding of the tools they are developing with.

In my opinion this should have always been the case. All designers should be able to code and do html/css. It's the medium of design.

What if the approach isn't reusable, but instead is rebuildable? We are stuck in the mindset of creating components that we can grab and plug in to new designs. When we have a component that we like, why not ask the tool to create a m

There's no way you can cut your wrists on the edge of a MacBook. To do that, you would have to be leaning straight-armed with all of your weight on the edge of the keyboard, which is a typing style that I've never seen. Mac keybo

A more concrete way of putting it is if you are putting so much weight on your wrists that the edge of the MacBook is making you uncomfortable, you're probably doing it wrong.
