So much this. I remember being so excited that Map and Set were added to the language, only to find that they were worse than useless for objects. At least Set can be handy in a pinch, but I have never seen an actual usecase for Map that is

As other commenters have mentioned, in fact it has functionality specific for this purpose. That is part of the underlying reason for my question: it often feels like the people pushing for graphql adoption are not aware what http is capabl

Pardon me for asking a perhaps naive question, but how is this not a solution to a self-inflicted problem? Using a normal restful HTTP api has none of these issues. What is the big problem that GraphQL solves, and is it really serious enoug

Don’t think that’s as much a “Jobs” reply as just a general senior management necessity. With the amount of “important” emails you get in a position with any kind of responsibility, writing thoughtful elaborate responses to each and every o

Fair enough, but I have no idea how that can be avoided if we take Sturgeon’s Law as a given: 90% of everything is garbage. I’d argue an essential quality in a modern software engineer is ‘good taste in dependencies’, if you will. Adding a

This is our case. A tiny staging environment will cause two tables to have billions of rows. This kills the Postgres. We are looking at moving this data out of the database and query it using Drill or similar. But if anyone has tips for han

Interesting, could you elaborate on this software and what it does? At work, we also offer two backends for the same kind of functionality. One is the industry standard Java implementation, one is a homegrown Rust implementation. We find th

I’m sorry to say, but your first paragraph is blatantly false. The jailbreaking community has been active since the iPhone product line existed, up to this day. Feel free to look it up. They provide instructions that a high school script ki

Fair point, I have to admit. And I do appreciate that to some degree, but it’s not what most people want out of a desktop environment since they do not have the technical know-how to do it anyway.

You have the right to do whatever you want to with your iPhone. Apple is not obligated to make it easy for you to do so, or honor their warranty if you choose to fiddle with it. The law getting involved here would be total overreach, and I

Is that a rhetorical question? I have never ran into the issue of my native screen resolution not being there on MacOS because the hardware and software are built in tandem. I haven’t used Windows in the past 10 years but I would safely bet

You are talking about UI though. UI is not UX. The last time I was forced to use a Linux desktop environment for work, the resolution that I needed it to run on was not supported. It took me 10 minutes of googling to find the arcane invocat

I get that. I don’t think you get my point though. The reason I want young people to get vaccinated is not due to COVID, since they’re very unlikely to have severe complications anyway. In fact, the actual vaccination is not the point at al

I’ll bite. There is actually a very simple argument to be made as long as you accept the premise that 1. Death is a natural part of life, and 2. It’s not years of life that should be saved, but _quality_ years of life. I find it unethical

Hard disagree for the long tail of apps. My company’s payroll admin system uses a PWA as a mobile interface. I don’t need slick ui there, I need to view my payslips (click a link to open a pdf) and request time off (fill in a 4-field form).

I found it funny you mention Clojure since leiningen takes 20 seconds to get to a REPL prompt on a full spec MBP 16 from last year. For all the hype about interactive development, I think Clojure people are deluding themselves if they think

What Drew is saying is absolutely correct though. YAML was specifically designed to be a superset of JSON. Conversely, when JSON was designed, YAML did not exist, so it only became a subset of YAML when the latter was introduced.

Such a weird comment. Are you proud of large-scale animal abuse or what exactly is the point you are trying to make here? As someone born in the former Soviet Union, “Russia does things this way” is not a good thing.
