You say that like it’s a bad thing. Ultra-capitalism is no better than ultra-communism. They are both systems designed to reduce democracy and to funnel all the money into the hands of a small number of elites. I prefer to live in a society

Doesn’t that just mean that the company is externalising its costs and privatising the profits? Frankly, I think this is the problem that needs to be solved.

> People won't work if they are not able to sustain themselves (calorically) on the pay. A better alternative is simply to require companies to pay a living wage. The outcome is better, because you don’t lose the safety net for thos

I’m a solo dev. At a high level, I find that just writing down what I’m trying to achieve and referring to it often is critical. The most important things to understand are what you’re building, who your users are, and when you want to la

The thing with type erasure is that reflection is a big part of Java - but it doesn’t work too well with generics. With optionals, I had hoped they would be a huge benefit to catching potential NPEs at compile time. But it was just lipstick

I’m yet to forgive them for type erasure. And optionals. But I stopped using Java about 5 years ago, after 20 years of being increasingly frustrated with it, and I couldn’t be happier.

I disagree. I want my phone to Just Work. I don’t want people to publish software that uses unstable APIs because that means your software running on my phone is going to break when I upgrade it. There are many dimensions to “freedom”,

It’s not worse at all, that’s ridiculous. Most devices now run Linux. The world of software is far more open than it was in the 1990s. That doesn’t mean every device needs to be open.

If Japan applied tariffs to iPhones to raise the price of them relative to domestic phones then it would be protectionism. That is the dictionary definition of protectionism. They didn’t, in this case, so it’s not.

I just don’t agree with this for a moment. And ironically the topic was covered in Gruber’s WWDC talk. What you’re proposing is exactly the same as saying that Apple is not allowed to privately test their APIs and frameworks in their own so

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has noticed this. Gruber’s take on Apple is generally good but politically his comments are often cringeworthy, to the point I don’t read the website regularly any more. It’s not protectionist to force Ap

I think DDD is a great book but like many of these kinds of things, I also think it's one of those books that has a couple of chapters of good ideas and then a dozen chapters of filler. That said, ideas like ubiquitous language and bou

DTMF signalling restricts what you can dial over a traditional PSTN line. In practice you can only dial what a regular landline phone can dial. * and # are used to signal commands rather than calling numbers. There are another 4 DTMF signal

I still feel like my point is being lost. A generic contact identifier that you’re only going to show to other humans can of course be a string. People can put whatever they want in there. But it won’t be useful for automation or other kind

What customer has *555 as their phone number? Edited to add: It does depend on what you are doing with the numbers. Focussing on the storage side is missing the point. It’s about the ambiguity. In general I’ve found that anything other tha

A large part seems to also be the insane first past the post voting system. A presidential vote, as I understand it, is only counted against a single candidate (unlike preferential voting for example). This makes the risk of a third candida

I thought you were going to say a different quote, along the lines that: change always takes more time than we expect, and has more impact than we imagine. Having primed myself so, I had to reread the camel quote a few times before I unders

I used to just store them as e164 (always with the country code), and as bigints. you need a bit of country-code based metadata to convert back to strings, but the storage format is ultra compact and unambiguous.

You do realise my comment was a joke right? In fact, I believe HN karma exists for the sole purpose of burning it on jokes. I mean obviously they were being downvoted because it’s nothing to do with the Dutch, it’s just a fart fort.

I strongly disagree. My expectation of what’s on my screen is that it’s ephemeral unless I take a screen shot. Here’s an example. I always use a random password when creating accounts for (eg) databases, but not every UI supports this, so I
