Where do you host your .net projects? I am especially interested in anything other than azure webapp and VM's/IIS.

I provide an initial estimate. Very high level but enough to give them the idea. If they want details I tell them I need to bill for the time and file it under project planning. Amazingly they are happy to pay for it and we are happy to do

If the incentive is not more money in most cases then it won’t work. And those who generously give may not oversee how money is spent and likely squandered to a certain degree. Takes an incredibly self sacrificing individual to risk it all,

Sure they do. Just ask twilio or nexmo. I get billed every month for sending sms from my app (pass thru carrier fees)

Probably 90% of the things that currently use SMS. Carriers keep hiking fees for sms, so this is a natural path for Devs.

estimate and result oriented work are two different things. Result oriented work is: Here is how much I did this week. I either met, exceeded or fell short of some expectation. The person then decides if this is the place they want to be an

Sounds to me like someone does not trust employees to manage themselves and meet deadlines, and thats ok. I was coming into this thread from a highly skilled, well paid workers perspective. Completely agree, if you need to micro-manage then

Is this better than a results oriented work week? And figure out your own schedule as individual or team.

I would rather they pickup my car fix it and return it. To me that is luxury. Forcing me to go to your location and waiting on you is not convenient.

I had the same issue and we ended up skipping docker all together. We went from hosting on prem to directly azure web apps. Something in between I think is where docker would be helpful.

I think this comment assumes web3 is done. The end goal is some middle ground between ease of use and some level of privacy that no one person controls. (other than you)

Agreed, for those who are technically inclined. One could argue its why facebook and twitter exist. Was too difficult or expensive to make your own / host your data. I am not advocating for web3. I am saying its some middle ground at a

I heard web3 is community owned state, which is the first reasonable argument for anything different than web2. Others host community state (Facebook) but sell your data to advertisers. Web3 is a way for you to pay for or earn state on a c

If a client wants a free trial I would be skeptical of the long term relationship. I view paying a freelancer for two weeks as the cost of doing business in the case they don’t work out. I will agree you need to know someone to get your foo

This feels more like how to not be miserable than stay engaged. I would have accepted do it for the money they pay you so much money you can retire early and end the misery.

Thanks for the links. Looks like a nice utility belt for devs who want to be productive. Most orgs kill productivity and creativity with lack of compensation, treating them like a code farm, or mediocre peers. Devs choose to be productive i

Don’t get a salesperson day one unless they are a partner or you have a boat load of cash to keep them happy- you get what you pay for. It is 100x better to have one or more clients with a need for your product. This means don’t dream up so

You may have supporters but at the end of the day the buck stops with you. If you are not in a position to deal with emotional roller coasters just wait on a startup. Clients rely on you and you need to be a solid rock. Eventually you will

I partially agree. Some companies are so dysfunctional contractors are the only ones getting stuff done. Some IT departments are just so slow and have so much red tape (no incentive to change the status quo - or have their hands tied for ot

It’s more about trust than finances. Face to face and remote work within the companies legal boundaries is the safer choice. Remote work with no legal leverage is scary when you think about handing over company assets. But then again, many
