It's amazing what doors having attended a good university can open. I'm on my second job after graduation, and I could obviously tell that the university I attended had a much larger impact on my hiring than the last years' worth of work ex

I'm aware of the GRE math test (I took it many years ago). And if everyone took it and appropriate breakdowns were provided (e.g. "Students with SAT between 1300 and 1400 did scored 6 on the national"), that would be a good thing (at least

The reasons it works out are subtle: (a) the host must know what's behind the doors, (b)the host must always open a door to a goat. Most people fail to keep into account one of those assumptions. In fact most tellings of the problem fail to

I was impressed that the movie used the Monty Hall problem. It's simple enough to get the point across quickly and easily. But challenges common sense. Of course, any class of MIT seniors learning this is a huge disappointment.

The authur seems to be so close. Quick sketch. Fill in the details. Implement new features one at a time. If you design the thing well, you shouldn't have to have any idea what these things are going to do and you can add functionality late

Not exactly the most user friendly interface. I kept trying to type anywhere into the google search box. :P Not bad. However, I agree with aneesh. Probably better used for annotation.

You're forgetting the second point DHH made. Target small businesses. They're a little more likely to spend money to improve performance than your average Joe internet user.

Misses the point. Ultimately, we as internet developers need to start thinking about charging customers. I'm always talking with friends about how applications are moving from the desktop online. And some of those applications best fit some

How do you compete with the giant, unwieldy distributed Java application that's been in development for ten years? Though it's expensive and terrible to maintain and nonintuitive, how do you catch up to it's feature list?

Clearest way I see. Is to look at the equivalent form: x^k = e^x. Then aneesh's solutions seem obvious. I don't believe there's an analytic solution either. Otherwise it'd be in my CRC as x/ln(x) crops up quite a bit.
