I have to admit that at first glance I don’t like this. These seem to be essentially normal str -> Any functions, with some naming limitations due to the existing string prefixes special-cased in the language. I don’t feel like adding th

It’s a shame, because it has some of the most well-done commentary I’ve seen in a game. Worth a look if you’re into discussions about game design.

One of the first things anyone should set up on a new corporate email account is a filter that sends messages containing “Sales Engineer” straight to spam.

No matter how you try to spin this, I don’t think you can call your browser a “user agent” if it’s implementing features that exclusively benefit advertising companies. If it were feasible to write one’s own web browser for personal use, no

Just mentioning that I love AWS' signed request model. It's so much easier than dealing with OAuth for APIs and I wish it would catch on more broadly. It's inspired an IETF RFC ( https://datatracker.ietf.org/do

There’s a sense in which it’s pedantically correct - ‘exit’ (and ‘help’) are not Python keywords outside of the REPL, so a beginner might try to use it in a script (maybe like sys.exit()?) and be confused. But I think the convenience is wor

I like this a lot. Happy to support any project willing to reject the usual “success story” of selling out to VCs and turning your product into subscription-based SaaS junk.

There are a decent number of NYPD officers in the subway system, but they do not seem to be utilized effectively. They almost exclusively congregate near station entrances, rather than patrolling the platforms where incidents actually occur

Suddenly it makes a lot more sense why Apple made a big deal about iPadOS being its own separate OS, even though the differences are so minimal.

Not really. I wish the trend of giant generic hero images on every blog post would go away, they almost never add any value. I think it was Medium that started the trend.

What a bizarre website. A documentary video, a children's book, but not a single line of example code. I tried to find a tutorial (Learn > Get Started) and got bounced to a different website with a contact detail collection wall.

To me, DevOps culture just feels like a way for businesses to save money by not staffing a dedicated infrastructure team and pushing all those responsibilities onto application developers. The amount of time I've spent fiddling with Te

Sounds like it applies to Cloud Domains as well (with the existing UI being preserved but essentially becoming a frontend to Squarespace). Subcontracting one of your core cloud services to a visual website building company, lol. You’d have

I'm jealous of technology workers from about 10 years ago, before work IM tools like Slack, HipChat, and Teams became the standard. Being able to work uninterruptedly except for emails (for which a delayed response was acceptable) soun

People love to say stuff like this. Meanwhile, I've never opened the App Store, have installed every GUI app on my system with Homebrew, most notable apps aren't even distributed through the App Store...

There are so many comments like this in this thread, it’s kind of surprising to me. Does the majority of HN live in big suburban homes? The idea of putting weight training equipment in my tiny apartment is laughable.

k8s has first-class support for ephemeral debug containers that share process namespaces for this purpose. Pretty cool feature imo. https://kubernetes.io/docs/tasks/debug/debug-application/deb...

Except DRF doesn’t call clean() anymore (as of 3.0?), so you have to reimplement all your validation logic in your serializers anyway. Always seemed like a huge mistake to me for a framework that’s supposed to feel like a natural extension

I wonder if people realize how low Firefox marketshare has fallen, or if people are stuck in a 2010s-era idea of what the web browser landscape is like. I also think the prevalence of Firefox among the (overall tiny) desktop Linux demograph

I dunno, I think if you publish a copy of your code to a registry then it would be both desirable and reasonable for that copy to be immutable. Allowing the deletion of published libraries can have huge downstream impacts and ultimately mak

On the whole I think the GitHub Actions experience is really nice, but there are some baffling decisions for sure, like requiring GitHub Enterprise just to put a manual approval step in a workflow.
