+1 - Watching from the sidelines I admire the work both from you and Chris. It is incredibly hard to move away from the current local maximum because of network effects.

It will be interesting to watch the proportion of safe/unsafe code in large Rust codebases over time.

There is a subtle issue that comes into play here a. High performance employee who works at employer A has already given ample evidence of going over and above usual metrics of efficiency. b. High performance employee decides to go into the

I hope that your philosophy of compensation is well understood by your employees. I would hate to be an employee who goes over and above work wise in such a setup.

OSX admittedly is a lot more seamless than linux - if you happen to be on a clients site and find your self stuck without admin privileges you do not need to worry - just enter root and all will be fine.

Opengrok implements hyperlinking for C/C++ code which is the primary productivity multiplier since it allows you to easily jump around callgraphs. That functionality is sorely missing here (unless i am missing this feature somehow).

Look at Microsoft for an example of how you can ignore quality for a long while before it catches up to you. (To their credit Microsoft did a stellar job of climbing out of that hole).

I think the issue is that in software you can only get promoted by writing whizbang new features. Until the time companies figure out an incentive system that properly rewards responsible stewardship of an existing product we will be stuck

From a workstation point of view this whole thing looks completely inverted. All the polished commercial offerings are moving farther and farther away from the power user. For those linux/freebsd/openbsd seem much better.
