Yes! Don't necessarily question it and get into an argument. But both you and your manager have a different set of context and view on what's really important to the team and organization. Neither of you is necessarily more correc

It's hard to explain, not because of NDA but because of context specific things. Almost everything I do is open source, but can't fit into a comment. My only advice to people at BigCo is to make sure you have a good reason for doi

I tend to agree here. Any tolerance for "slowness" is anti-free-market. I don't necessarily think completely free markets are optimal, but I can't see a reasonable argument for slower being better than faster in general.

Exactly! Waiting would just be the Fed preferring slower movers to faster ones.

What does that even mean though? The market is supposed to represent something close to the "correct" state of things, based on public knowledge. Given the warnings, how long should it take to "get ready"? And should the

Yes, this matches my experience as well. I've been at Google 6 years now in various SWE roles. I can count the number of times I've been directly asked to do something by anyone in my management chain on one hand.

patio11 had a great back of the envelope calculation awhile ago on this. Turns out showing ads for a fridge right after you just bought one might be highly successful. Say the average person buys a fridge once every 10-20 years, the probabi

There should be! We haven't thought too much about it yet, but there's no reason it wouldn't work. We can't reuse the Docker daemon cache because that would imply access to the docker daemon. Discloser - I work on kaniko

Kaniko doesn't use buildkit - buildkit still uses containerd/runC under the hood so it can't run inside a container easily. We are looking at interoperability with buildkit (and the large set of of other tooling like this) th

I wonder how this tool handles performing the docker build itself. It looks like it runs a controller inside the cluster, but by default apps running inside kubernetes don't get access to the docker daemon. There are a few existing wor

That's a bit out of date - today layer IDs are for the most part sha256's of the contents of the layer tar.gz. However, it's still very difficult to generate the same layer ID twice. Timestamps permeate the layer contents its

Hey Jacques, Do you have any more info on the idea about identifying commonalities between filesystems? I work on Skaffold and really want to speed up builds.

Skaffold maintainer here - most of us are also minikube maintainers and we have a bunch of ideas on how to speed up this loop. Keep an eye on this repo:)

Maintainer of the tool here - I'm not sure I understand this idea. What would go in the mock container? How would you test against it? Would you mind elaborating a little more?

Maintainer of container-structure-test here. Cool example! We started with something like this, but ran into some issues when trying to test images that don't contain a shell.

Maintainer of the tool here - this is definitely the main use-case. We produce container images that are used directly or indirectly (as a base image by other users), and the structure tests here are a way for us to define the contract our

We should definitely credit Debian more in the readme, but note that the existing package manager rules are actually a bit decoupled from the distroless images themselves, via bazel. We happen to build these base images with the Debian rule

Here's the example I'm thinking of: One image has a large file at a specific path, added via something like: "COPY largefile /etc/path1". Another image wants to add this same file to a different location: "
