I remember the thread on this game from the forum where the author is a moderator. It's quite a feat even nowadays. And the game is still addictive. Once a year, on April Fools these lemmings take over this forum ( http://gathering.tweakers

Have to agree with you, what I don't get from a UI perspective is the plus sign on the bottom bar of your homescreen. It's there to add icons/apps to your homescreens but how often is that going to happen that you need a button for the purp

I also have a HTC Hero and exactly the same experience. I don't care for the Sense UI and next time I'll get a phone that runs the native Android UI (a Google phone or they should force that any phone with alternative UI's also can run the

I have the same experience, my major is filled with statistics and math and coming out of high school I didn't have the right prerequisites. Nonetheless, a decent amount of interest and some hard work and I got up to speed in no time. Calcu

I built a bayesian text classifier on App Engine a few weeks ago but it was too slow to be of any use (the datastore that is). Still fun to get it to work though. Did stumple upon a Bayesian classifier web service: http://www.uclassify.com

Is there a webservice that allows you to send in files (PDF with images, png, jpeg etc.) through an API and have the service send you a .txt, .doc or a pdf of the same file with the text embedded?

There's formtastic [1] to whip up forms according to the models. Using this and some DRY admin controller you can assemble an admin controller pretty quickly. Still, nowhere as fast as the Django admin. There are also some plugins to get an

Since Apple is most likely to make money off AppleCare, it means that it's probably not worth it. If there's a 50% chance your MacBook breaks and it's worth $1000 you're worse off when you insure it if your insurance premium is above $500.

I now use Vagrant for App Engine and it's a breeze to set up. Since the working directory is mounted by the vm textmate works as always. I only have to ssh into the virtual machine to run some python scripts since locally there are some dep

Any plans for a repository of boxes? One with a LAMP stack, Rails stack, Django stack etc. I know I can roll my own and use chef there could be a community maintained repository of often used configurations. Also, in the screencast you use

That sort of sums up my rule. If I haven't used it in the past five years, I toss it out. It's only rarely that I come across something that I threw away earlier. Only exception to this rule is books and I doubt that'll change.

Isn't this what plagiarism algorithms are doing? Scrape the content, run through the plagiarism filter (although not a very strict one to prevent false positives on quotations and the like) and you are done. If there's a match, show it so t

I've been busy trying to get a college degree. Most of my projects also involve RoR and Python nowadays and I've gotten a bit out of touch with the Kohana codebase. Some real improvements have been made though. Perhaps I'll get back in to i

I recently moved away from Evernote for this reason and the slow client. The one thing Evernote has is the websync and webclient but between Dropbox (latex in text files), Gmail and Google Docs I get pretty much the same functionality.

No idea what pixel-tagging is but it seems they use javascript to load an image. The url of the image tells Google which link has been clicked on. There's some extra information in the url as well.
