Is there any advantage to this approach over Postgres native uuid support which should store the same number of bits?

Thanks, I'll give that a listen. Here is the Apple Podcast link to the same episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-joe-reis-show/id16... I've also experimented with duckdb whilst on a da

How did you come to that conclusion? I inspected the bold cursive text, and Firefox dev tools tell me it's "Sriracha". https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Sriracha?query=Sriracha

The issue with maritime insurance, is that ocean going vessels spend a great deal of time in other countries from where the owner registers the ship, and also time in international waters, which are not governed by the laws of any country.

Sometimes it is more important to work on proving you have a viable product and market to sell it in before you optimise. On the outside we can’t be sure. But it’s possible that they took the right decision to go with a naïve implementation

Insurance is by contract and either side can take claims to court if the contract is not upheld. I wouldn’t call that a gentleman’s agreement. The maritime system is complex. But it wasn’t just made up by a few people. It’s evolved continuo

It would be quite nice to have some of the S3 semantics on local files. Like no one else can the see the file until after you’ve finished writing the file and committed it. And being able to put almost any chara in the file name (key). That

I suspect the China issue was a carve out in the comment you replied too. Since they were referring to the west. As for Rome, it was never a Nation in the modern sense. It started as a city state and became an empire. My understanding is th

Most engineering (certainly that I know) is based on linear algebra. But of course there is a lot to learn in that field, but covering the basics can help understand a lot of engineering maths. Equations, differentiation, integration, parti

Cursor is electron/vscode based. Zed uses a custom built rust UI and editor model that gives 120fps rendering. (Or was it 60fps) It is really smooth on a Mac with ProMotion.

Interestingly I was just watching talk from Nick Lane, presented at the Royal Institution about mitochondria and respiration. What is amazing to me is that respiration isn’t just burning glucose to make ATP, it also makes many other essenti

I would prefer it if Mozilla continued is great rust rewrite, and innovate the core technologies. Just adopting Chrome's crumbs will mean giving up control and voice in stearing the web technologies.

Faster feedback is the shortcut. And it always works. Faster boot time is lower latency to serve the queue. Faster feedback is stabilising.

A missing feature of the App Store is that it does not support screen savers. You can only download an app that spits out a screen saver. I would love the ability to download free and paid screensavers from the App Store that are sandboxed

That’s not how most apps work. They tend to allocate memory for specific purposes and free it when done. Only more heavy apps will retain large buffer pools, like databases but they are usually tunable. And apps themselves don’t page to di

If you turn off the cell radio on your phone then it won’t emit cell phone signals. Apart from that you must send a signal to be able to receive calls and data packets. And that signal encodes your location.

Adding paprika to ready salted crisps is pretty effective. I bet it would work with other spices too. The thing is that you can buy one big bag, and then tune the flavours, for example if one person doesn’t like paprika.
