I'm trying to break away from Windows but Linux OSes are in such poor shape as replacements for workstations... In particular I'm talking about desktop environments, not so much the OSes themselves, although the kernel and the OSe

I'm not even sure what to make of this. No sane developer I know will work without an IDE, much less prefer not using an IDE. Sure, we can probably write code without an IDE but in what way does that mean I'm a better developer? I

I'm not sure what's going on, but on the flip side I've noticed a general lack of care from service workers at restaurants lately. Anecdotal evidence, obviously, but my meals have often had wrong ingredients, incorrect items,

No no, we get it. Some people, like myself, still think that copyrights serve a purpose.

Not sure I agree. A lot of my successes have been not only because of hard work but because I made good choices. Life is mostly about making your own luck.

Yep. However it really sucks that you have to out companies like this on social media in order to get them to act on things.

Well dude, they're... stuck. They're stuck in the middle of nowhere. That feels horrible no matter what happens. It happened to me yesterday at MCO.

I made a similar comment below. I'm surprised at the anger towards repl.it on this thread.

I think the issue was that he was a previous employee. Normally I'd say "yeah, no problem, make a competitor" but he's been exposed to the internal workings of the company.

Yeah this is what I'm unsure of as it steps into the legal side of things. In general though, doesn't it make sense to not create a free competitor right after leaving your employer? They may have a case regarding stealing trade s

I don't know about what the CEO of repl.it did. It shouldn't matter. I only know what the author has chosen to publish on his blog post. He corresponded with his previous employer regarding a free project that competes with them.

I'm not sure I follow. How is this a Reddit comment? I don't think the author of this post is in the right here. Most people are piling on saying Repl.it is behaving irrationally. But to me it seems... in line with what an employe

Yeah, not sure about this one chief. I don't know the legal aspects here, but I think it makes sense to not create an open-source project that competes with your previous employer and then correspond with them letting them know you did

This is great advice and it's what I've done with my open source projects as well. The point of open source is that it's just that: it's open and free. People can try demanding things from you, but you don't work fo

I’m not sure this is a valid counterargument. The intent is clear when someone says “it likely leaked from the lab in Wuhan”… I’m surprised how pedantic everything has gotten.

Postgres is good, even great, but this is hyperbole. Postgres has its downsides, autovacuum being one of them.

No one is angry. That's the point. The point is that no one should care about race, but everyone all of the sudden is.

This is what I used when I used Elixir. But I can't say I prefer it to the other tools that are available in other languages. Pattern matching was cool, I guess.

So here's my experience as a hobbyist. I really enjoyed using Elixir when it gained some traction around 2017-2018 and found the language to be beautiful. The documentation is also great. Here's a few reasons why I never kept usin

There doesn’t need to be a grand conspiracy to want to smear someone. Additionally, what happened to innocent until PROVEN guilty? Allegations are not proof.
