I suspect that lots of people ask for O(n) when they mean Θ(n) instead which specifies both an upper and lower bound. For example, specifying Θ(n^3) as the running time for a bubble sort would be incorrect whereas O(n^3) would be imprecise

Perhaps that is the disconnect here. Negotiations do not necessarily include ultimatums. Obviously, one must be prepared to deal with the situation where an employer declines to meet your compensation requests, but framing it as an ultimatu

Daily 30-minute meetings sounds to me like the antithesis of good management. If you feel like you need 30 minutes of synchronous time per day from your team of engineers, you are not a good manager.

I recently went through this process with a lot of the same companies on this guy's list although I limited mine to 100% remote roles. I do agree that some interview and coding prep is beneficial although not nearly as much as he sugge

I recently had a slew of interviews at FAANG and FAANG-adjacent companies (and accepted a great offer at one of them) that were 100% remote. It's good to name and shame the ones that are lying or otherwise underhanded about it, but I&#

I am no fan of a lot of the design choices or the effort required to operate large ES clusters, but there are easily several hundred man-years of development effort behind ES. It would be a really long time before a team starting from scrat

It seems especially egregious that AWS claimed their hosted offering was a partnership with Elastic when they launched it: https://twitter.com/kimchy/status/1351534454154543106

Having interacted with Elasticsearch a lot, I assure you there is a lot for them yet to improve. Frankly, I think Elasticsearch followed the MongoDB model of "make it easy for developers to adopt and then make it good." MDB did th

Wow, it's pretty surprising to me that the agreement allowed AWS to refer to Elasticsearch at all when promoting their own managed search offering.

I guess there's some value to a listing of salary/equity figures without the associated company, but it would be far more valuable if the company were included. One thing I really like about levels.fyi is that their comp data stre

This +100. I'd pay a reasonable amount for my Google Voice numbers, too, if it would ensure that I don't lose them on short notice.

In addition to ringing true, this seems largely in line with Thomas Kuhn's thesis in his Structure of Scientific Revolutions [0], a book which despite its shortcomings, should be required reading for anyone in a STEM field. [0] https:

Frankly, you should just ask your manager what the comp change, if any, would be if you switched roles. This is a normal question in all but the most dysfunctional companies.

I would expect that your startup experience would place you well among a pool of entry-level candidates once you made it past the resume screening stage. Where the FANG position is going to help you is in getting past that stage. Fairly or

In my experience, getting a FAANG job accelerates your career as well or better than titling up quickly in a startup. Having a FANG position on your resume is more of a known quantity for future potential employers than being promoted quick
