I picked up this trick from reading the scrypt source code. A few months later I was asked it in a job interview. Thanks, Colin :-)

You'll never get selected. In most any lawsuit, if you have a three figure IQ, then chances are that one lawyer or the other doesn't want you on the jury.

You don't have to understand the library, the author's coding style, or even much of the language in order to answer a question like this. You grep the codebase for '302' to find the constant that represents a redirect, and then you grep f

I used LFS exclusively between about 2001 and 2003. My motivation then was mostly the fact that every distro sucked so badly. That's no longer the case, but I definitely recommend it as a learning experience. Afterwards you'll no longer

In this particular case, they have some decent mens rea protections. You're only criminally liable if you "know" that a law was broken, and only civilly liable if "in the exercise of due care [you] should know". Your broader point stand

You should change "total" to "subtotal", and have the full total include how much extra you'd have to pay in order offset the deficit. Then at the bottom, "balance outstanding": your share of the public debt.

What historical evidence is there for this? In every case I can think of in which a Google product supplanted an established competitor, it's been pretty clear that it did so through merit. As a converse example, I don't see Google Finance

I think the takeaway is a lot broader: never assume that a company won't do evil things with your data if you don't have a service contract with them saying that they can't. See also: http://xkcd.com/743

You kind of need the menus. A lot of modes rely on them outright, and even if they don't you still don't want to memorize a new set of keybindings for a mode that you'll only ever use once. The toolbar, though, isn't much besides a waste
