Luck plays a role. A significant one. But so do you! Here's an example from my own life: In the late 80's, heading into the early 90's I was working in manufacturing. Paid poorly, but man! I love that work. Had a great ti

It's a bit more subtle than that. Understanding others is important. Blanket "there is too much x" or similar kinds of observations leave out the actual person writing and the context. I read the stuff, and have read other

Usually, I put podcasts on a playlist. I drop off somewhere in that list. When that doesn't work? Benadryl. 10Mg and it's good night in roughly 40 minutes to an hour.

Too late for me to edit, but yes I did confuse the source of the bug. Please clarify the C64 drive scenario source of slowness. Was it VIC-20 backward compatibility, or? In any case, I maintain the engineering wasn't at fault, having

Would that not mean general excitement on the part of the author? I find it hard to analyze these things by numbers alone. It's context that really matters and if there truly is a baseline excitement, there really should be a high num

Well, it was slower due to a hardware problem. Basically, the hardware serial device had a bug which required a bit bang comms channel to the disk drive. Doing that amidst the sometimes aggressive video DMA is what caused all the slowdown

Yeah, the 1702 is a great display for the 8 and 16 bit eras of gaming and computing. It comes down to the CRT having a tight color mask and the monitor circuits doing a good job handling the signals. And having seperate color and intensity

Yes, that is true. However, moving a zero to a register does take time. Time that would otherwise be used operating with the zero value already present in the zero register. The second best is what moto did. As you point out, there is th

Where it's not optimized away, getting "an actual zero" requires a memory operation of some kind. Register ops are faster in that they are right there, no fetch needed.
