Pay up or die.
Or maybe it is pay up or be crippled.
How about, pay up or she dies. Terribly?
Most importantly, walking away is not a meaningful option in most cases. Who thinks trying to get the best dealz during a trauma event or heart attack makes any sense?
We all know what happens when a person cannot walk away from the deal, right?
They get the absolute lowest value for the highest dollar possible. And that happens because of greed.
No judgement on the greed either. Just recognize it is a thing, is going to be a thing and has always been a thing. We humans tend to do that sort of thing and frankly, committing to the common cause of our mutual good health is mutually selfish and a great way to make sure the games are there to be played by everyone. I am dead serious.
Now, what happens when one can walk away from a deal?
Much higher, if not the highest value for the dollar!
Why?
Greed again, only this time the greedy forces must work together to arrive at an equitable deal.
Because of how health care actually must work due to our human condition, it is not well aligned with markets. And some of us LOVE markets!
Trust me, I get that. I love markets when they make sense. There are enough competitors to insure robust market action delivers good value for the dollar without anyone getting hurt.
I do not love markets where the core value proposition is not losing your home, for example. And I basically had to do that once. Trade a home for more time with my wife.
An experience like that tends to wake a person right the fuck up proper. Yup. That happened and I dug into this matter deeply too.
Why?
Well, my inventory of homes ran out and she is still at some risk and, well you get the idea.
Thing is when it happened it was not even my call! Let's just say someone made a trip to Belize a priority over the well being of the people doing the work and again, you get the idea.
Now before I continue, elective care can be a market. So can related services and options. But primary care, like being able to live and work? Nope. People can't just walk or wait for a better deal and that means far too many are paying too hard or are dying needlessly.
The whole pay up or die proposition is pretty goddammed brutal and millions of Americans face that crap all the time and they should not need to.
Fact is when we commit as a nation to take good care of our own, we can pool our risks and fund doing that very well and the fact that we are not doing that means our well being as citizens is just not a priority!
Frankly, that is completely unacceptable!
And that somehow via corruption and a largely dysfunctional government we continue to "accept" this brutal state of affairs is exactly why we spend so damn much on health care too.
"Nice life you got there. Sure would be a shame if something happened to it."
Think it through. I did. Forced to.
Maybe we can avoid you being forced to like I was.
