They used to be custom machines. Now they are just what you say, software and a keyboard.

But the example the poster you are replying to gave shows that GPT-3 can take the square root of a user-defined function composed with itself. It clearly can perform arithmetic, and we don't need to trust OpenAI now that users can inte

The type signature of division in Haskell merely requires that it takes two fractional `a`s and returns another `a`. 1 / 0 :: Double evaluates to Infinity. 1 / 0 :: Rational throws a runtime exception. A division by

One of the authors, Philip Wadler, contributed heavily to the design of Haskell. So I presume it's friendly joking.

I honestly think that Haskell's combined speed/correctness/maintainability is exceptional, none is in isolation, but I can't think of any reasonably production-ready language that has such a great combination of all thre

The oldest person in the world was born in 1903, before George Orwell, Frida Kahlo and Lyndon Johnson. It's genuinely hard to fathom.

Yes, but the author is a student making use of their open source software. I think that's in the spirit of hacking.

I work at a large tech company on a young team (average age is late twenties). In my experience many don't view working from home regularly as a benefit. I understand that must change drastically when you're middle aged, have a fa

I agree, I also think there is some weirdness going on with the 'we can presume it has infinite memory'. There seems to be many assumptions of different strength all waved with that same phrase, depending on the system in question

Why would you make a comparison by gzipping one and not the other? Running gzip on the msgpack example reduced it from 304 to 248 bytes.

It doesn't mesh well with the retweet functionality if a user can retroactively change the content.

partition p xs = foldr (select p) ([],[]) xs select p x ~(ts,fs) | p x = (x:ts,fs) | otherwise = (ts, x:fs) That is the entirety of `partition` in the standard library.

The paper you linked shows that one Haskell implementation does not exactly correspond to a specific algorithm, then gives an alternative definition which does correspond. What does that have to do with the statement 'Haskell is not ma

Plenty of serious researchers in top universities are studying the intersection of mathematics and functional programming, and I don't think that they're somehow not 'real mathematicians'. Here's a paper by the auth

The phrase appears 6 chapters into a graduate mathematic text on category theory. If one reads the preceding chapters, it is a useful but pithy explanation for what a monad is, using terms which have all already been covered. Its use outsid

Dhall[1] is a similar concept, though instead of augmenting a particular format, it is an implementation of a simple pure functional programming language (with a very expressive type system which guarantees termination). Dhall programs can
