It’s such a bad idea that every OS except Linux implements it? On macOS it’s posix_spawn, on Windows it’s NtCreateProcess.

NT was designed to be platform-agnostic, and its original target was the DEC Alpha. Its process model owes nothing to pre-386 CPUs. The WinAPI CreateProcess function is a layer atop NtCreateProcess, so that is where the pre-386 heritage liv

Don’t pretty much all OSes implement process startup in userspace? On macOS, the kernel creates a process with an image of dyld and points it at dyld_start, which actually takes care of parsing the Mach-O header. I assumed ld.so does the sa

I don’t think they implied Romex? Conduit is mandatory in multi-family construction here in San Francisco, but they just use armored cable, not romex in conduit.

Again, NtCreateProcess does not implement fork(). The fundamental characteristic of fork is that the child is an exact replica of the parent, down to the instruction pointer. Windows does not have a way to create a process object with such

NtCreateProcess does not implement a forking model. It is analogous to posix_spawn.

No, I was saying that you can assign different loopback addresses to different interfaces even if the interfaces have been assigned the same routable IP address. This lets you distinguish them. On my Mac, however, loopback addresses are onl

I support workers being compensated for their value; what I dislike are protectionism and ossification. I am fortunate that software has paid me well to work on problems I am enthusiastic about solving. I understand that a lot of people on

Please re-read the specific comment I replied to. It was someone expressing indignation that a software engineer would accept “high-quality” PRs from a non-software engineer, accusing the poster of lacking “class consciousness.”

I’m not strawmanning anything. I’m pointing out what I believe to be ridiculous gatekeeping. Software engineering isn’t some holy magic that must be kept from the masses. I can go on YouTube and get step-by-step instructions on how to safel

Man, you must hate those handymen who put up YouTube videos showing how to do basic home maintenance. A truly class-conscious handyman would insist that the homeowner hire them to replace a light switch.

What do you mean “receiving host?” 127/8 is reserved for loopback. If you bind a socket to an interface with an address in that range, you can only use it to communicate with yourself. The sending and receiving hosts are the same.

There is no problem with allocating one 127.0.0.0/8 to every interface on your host, because 127.0.0.0/8 is only ever accessible to the host itself. So even if you have multi-homed a single routable IPv4 address to 2 NICs on your

The IPv6 feature isn’t link-local addresses, it’s being able to specify the interface to bind to as part of the address specification. This lets you demand that your IPv6-based tool use your wired Ethernet connection, for example.
