I know it doesn't mean much, but that AOL and this AOL are really two entirely different companies for all intents and purposes.

I don't think I was hiding the fact that a big part of my Apple support comes equally from my distrust of Google than my love of Apple. I just look at the wreckage each has created and would pick Apple's wreckage over Google's any day. I'm

Comments all removed. The parent asked why I defend apple and I laid out my argument. Clearly people cared enough to respond and react. And yet I'm being downvoted for sharing my perspective just because it might be contrarian? Maybe that

I'm talking about technical solutions, perhaps in the DNS.

It's not obvious what technical solutions exist that are practical to combat this. I feel like a lawsuit against DHS / ICE and related parties is an unfortunate but necessary step.

This company is almost entirely investor owned. Geez. It's been saved from the brink of death so many times, the actual employees and founders really aren't going to get a tremendous windfall for their efforts.

Netscape absolutely deserved to go public based on any metric. The future could not be predicted based on their inaction and Microsoft's dominance.

Not really. Go find a company from '97 that had $70 million in revenue and was breaking even.* If there is a company, it might have had absurdly inflated ad-based revenue when CPMs were like $30.

That's not the logic that sank the company. Seriously, $5 or $10K increase in monthly rent is a pittance. There are a lot more wasteful things I could bitch about than that, and I'm a cheap-ass.

The amount of money that it costs to outfit an office comfortably is minuscule to real recruiting costs. How about paying $20,000 for a recruiter to find a world-class engineer and get them to leave Google to join your never-been-heard-abou

What does it cost in terms of talent and time for every block away from BART and the Underground you decide to locate your office? It's a more expensive than an extra $5K or $10K a month in rent, that's for sure.

You are factually incorrect in almost everything you say. There's really no place to start. I'd agree with you about watching out for dotcom excess if it wasn't so inaccurate in this case. :-)

When it's cached, your browser won't make an HTTP request to the CDN. That's the entire point. They can do some VERY ROUGH back of the envelope calculations to figure out based on cache-expiry headers and number of requests how many new pe

Being out of the drivers seat made me realize all the things that I wasn't doing when I was CEO, and which were still not being done the way I thought they should be. But it was easier to see on the outside.

If they are able to get to the Caltrain station in San Francisco (which we are next to), they should email david (at) opendns.com and apply to be an intern. All interns are paid.

I have interns now, and I love having them. I don't think it was because of the 90s. Good interns (who have good mentors) have the heart and passion and remind me why I love doing what I do. Keep in mind that I started my internship in l

I think Matt lays out a strong argument for why they have made such a stink. And it sounds like a pretty compelling defense for their actions to go public. But... 1) I think they will regret it bigtime when all the attention they are causi

You fail to understand how to interpret a "relative growth" chart. Google is not "steadily between +20% and +60% growth." Since a random point in time picked by WA it shows what you would be up on another random point in time. If you look

This is factually incorrect. The google toolbar records clickstream data across all sites* * all with some specific exceptions for perhaps SSL and locally-resolved zones, or something like that.

You fail to understand the issue here. None of this stuff is on by default in Windows. You have to install the Bing toolbar.
