I've been thinking the same thing ever since this story broke. I don't think bidding mathematical constants says anything about whether or not google was taking the auction seriously.

I am the author :). It's possible I didn't make my point as clearly as I could have in my post though. Also re: phone prices, I agree with you. I think the pundits were wrong and pre-judged Apple's path to success on little evidence. I thin

No they're not failing over all at all. They're just failing at web stuff (which they keep trying at). I wouldn't change a thing with their hardware business, and as a result I wouldn't change apple.com. I would change me.com though, becaus

Yeah, I guess there are a few small leaps in the first two points there. The connection I was trying to make was that Apple's taking it's experience with things they understand (desktop apps, marketing to professionals, making beautiful thi

I don't think these situations are parallels. Clones were a bad idea because they diluted Apple's brand and cut way into their margins (Apple is a hardware company and makes money from that). As for cheap phones, Apple now sells the 3GS for

My point wasn't that less professional looking websites succeed over more professional looking sites. It's Apple's focus on professional content (the select few) vs amateur content (all of us). I didn't mean to use amateur in a derogative s

I've always wanted a search engine that is optimized for searching for code embedded in web pages. AFAIK google code search isn't really an option because it only searches through code, not through blog posts, stack overflow, and other page

Often times you are behind a firewall and this isn't a viable option. It's also easier to remember a domain name rather than an IP address.

Well significant debt complicates everything, but assuming you don't have any debt, necessity is the mother of invention. If your livelihood depends on you learning something, you will probably learn it much faster and better.

Totally forgot about this point. Starting up right out of college is great because you know how to live like a college student :).

Perhaps I was overly strong, but my point was that whatever you're learning at your job, you'll learn it faster if you're starting your own company. I worked a few jobs right out of college and I learned some stuff that I think is applicabl

Series A + 2 to 3 people is way earlier than I thought. I would like to have someone to take care of all this paperwork for me though... :) How did you find yours? Was he a friend before hand?

I love it. Don't know why I didn't think of this. nicholasbs started riffing off of this idea and I have some good ideas. I still think a more general list is probably worth it, but I'm going to start by building this :)

To be honest, I kind of like the tone of Techcrunch. The fact that many of the writers on Techcrunch have their own voice makes Techcrunch more fun to read than other tech blogs. If you're looking to build a competing startup news blog, I t

The same thing happened to me on Delta/North West last winter: I missed my flight and booked a new one without telling customer service. Seems pretty par for the course overall. The difference is I was able to apply what I had spent on the

I see how this might look a bit ironic ;). The reason we're shutting down HireHive and launching something new is precisely because of what we've learned in the past 8 months working in the hiring space. The only way to find out if there's

I definitely agree that 50/50 is nowhere near a hard and fast rule. The split depends on how long the company has been around, how much progress has already been made, etc. The larger point I was trying to get across is the discrepancy betw
