It’s fashionable just now to hate monoliths, so much so that developers would probably be afraid to suggest anything other than creating a suite of microservices for fear of sounding backward or inexperienced. It’s a bit like if anyone ever

Yeah I agree. The way this thread is going you would think that all errors are easy and all you have to do is what the computer tells you and you’re done. I wish I’d known it was all that simple!

Coding on a whiteboard while being questioned by two or more interviewers isn’t really a true representation of a work situation. It’s always more stressful and some people thrive on it, some people don’t. Im not sure what the better altern

Correctamoodo. In my recent experience, building a docker image and deploying to ec2 has been 100 times less painful than using lambda. And I can move it all off AWS and run it on a fridge in a matter of hours if I need to.

This stuff makes me cringe. Self organising teams. As soon as that’s old news there will be something else that the consultants start peddling.

If users misuse a UI then the UI wasn’t designed well. If developers misuse REST then it’s their fault for not understanding REST.

Yes this annoys me. It’s even worse when X does Y long after they became successful and everyone starts saying they need to do Y to succeed. Well Y wasn’t what made X successful!! I believe that kind of thing is just touted by consultants i

Maintaining two code bases is not a big deal. Check them both out side by side. There they are right in front of you. Is sold as a bigger problem than it really is.

Half an hour wiring up some well understood rest calls vs tearing your hair out close to a deadline when React won’t call a new feature? Always keep it simple I say.

Yes I agree. Hybrid platforms always foster great productivity at the start. In the early days it’s like “wow, we just produced two apps in no time at all with one codebase”. But eventually the curve plateaus, and its more like “for F * sa

It’s incredible the lengths intelligent, experienced developers will go to, to avoid learning iOS or Android development. It’s a small bump to overcome to unshackle your project from an ever changing comfort blanket between yourselves and t

Remember that writing code is one of many tasks of a software engineer. You need to communicate with stakeholders, understand and help shape requirements, work on estimating (yes unfortunately), liaise with testers, liaise with 1st, 2nd and

No it's not bike shedding. The team should certainly choose the most appropriate language. Even if not all of them have experience in it. If they decide on clojure then go for it. But agree on something and move on. Also, saving lines

I agree with you that being comfortable with a stack is not a good reason to use it. Developers need to keep up with emerging languages. Team leads also need to be doing this and provide direction. But as I said, there is more to the succes

After developing software for 20 years, hearing the argument of ‘X language is better than Y’ gets a bit boring. At the end of the day, you can write shit code or good code in either language in the same way that you can build a shit house

I expect backbone forces you to follow good principles such as separation of concerns (data-model from UI code etc.) However, it's still possible to follow good principles using your own design and JQuery, which means you're tied

I think Zappos still have managers, but they gave them a different name so they could release an article and get some nice PR in the current anti-manager climate. I think managers are being scapegoated as you say. I'd dare any company
