Yeah I've read this book to and I don't think it's a real representation of the type of person wanting to run a life-style business. I'd guess it's mostly fantasy.

Just read the original post, and realised it didn't sound as jokey as I'd intended. I'll add a smiley next time. But I was serious about the topic however. Come on... that story was at number one on the front page! :-)

I lost 2 karma points for expressing a valid opinion? It just confirms to me that HN is not what it used to be. I'll find somewhere else to find real actual tech discussion from now on and the community here can keep their karma points

Thanks for backing me up a little. I seem to have lost karma points for expressing my opinion also.

How would website owners have confidence that their article would appear on a blog with significant traffic?

Really like the idea, if you can get enough bloggers on board.

This, and about 2000 other articles, are just a regurgitation of the Lean Startup book. It's almost comical these days when you read a blog article or pick up a magazine and it's just recycled ideas from that book.

I'd have to disagree there. No matter how good a developer you are, if you're in a rush, you're not going to output the same quality. There's always going to thousands of decisions in a programmers head where they could

I nearly fell off my chair at this response. The app is obviously aimed at non-programmers. Good luck getting them to pay you in Bitcoins.

I think both of those options are really about yielding happiness. The first option seems a hell of a lot safer and the second one seems a little uncertain. If it's happiness you're after, then you're more likely to find it i

Sounds interesting, but it might be an idea to install Google Analytics (or anything similar) to see if there is really significant traffic coming from AT&T in the first place before going to this trouble.

I've just begun coding with Titanium to create an iOS app, and so far so good. The fact it uses JavaScript, meant I could get an app working incredible quickly. Even, if you are only developing for iOS or Android, I think that Titanium

I think people don't talk about it because it's not new and it's therefore not cool. With the number of financial institutions that have systems build on Java (for good reason, its mature, performant, has many many tools an f

I think it's a good idea. You'd need to include more systems than you mention however. Our company uses a few of the ones you mentioned.

I think it's a good idea to ship fast for the sake of getting early feedback. However, you don't have ship to everyone. You can ship early to a small group of users, then when you've improved the product over a number of iter

To be fair, they were the ones that took the gamble of a one-off payment rather than a subscription, so should really have stuck to their guns and supported it. At least longer than 4 months.

Having said that, I'd be slightly sceptical the next time they launch a product. Are they just testing the water and is that too going to be discontinued in a few months time?

I think Breeze was just an experiment for 37 Signals, which might explain the unusual pricing strategy of a one off payment. I'd bet they always intended to refund all users if they didn't meet a critical mass. If they had charged a subscri

It's funny how people are so interested in the development practices of Facebook as if that's how it should be done. It's a bit like the halo effect, where if the company does one thing right (get lucky and dominate the market by being firs

Interesting. Using composition of objects like that is a sensible enough approach. What about also just implementing lazy loading in your domain objects. If you try to get details of a user and it's already been fetched from the server, the
