Little bit unconventional, but try writing your front end in Elm, and use the elm-ui library to avoid writing html or javascript. It compiles to javascript and will generate an index.html for you if you want. Elm is highly opinionated… mayb

What if we trained two AIs to be moral? What are the chances they’d agree with each other? I’m sorry, I don’t believe in the AI rapture.

Staff cuts mean there are fewer people left to do the same amount of work. Nobody likes that. Staff cuts can target high earners (so better programmers) as easily as they can target worse programmers.

People love watching car crashes. The Truss car crash is over, we needed a new one to rubberneck at. And it distracts from depressing news like inflation / Russia-Ukraine / Covid / Brexit / climate fail / strikes.

Just to add to this: it’s even more important to spend some time outside in daylight if it’s cloudy that day and there’s no direct sunlight.

Partly I set alarms on my phone. Partly I check which meetings I have at the start/end of the day and after lunch. Partly I switch off notifications that I’d just ignore otherwise (eg email).

I don’t understand the use case. Why would someone the OS to use one language, but an application running on that OS to use a different language?

That’s true, but can hardly be blamed on their tax or higher education policies, surely?

I wouldn’t be happy with a manager mandating a change of language, whatever the change was. I’m happier working with Elm on the front end that I am with Typescript on the backend though.

No, because you had to pay extra for Turbo Pascal. Most PCs came with GW Basic. Most home computers came with some dialect of Basic. If you didn’t already know how to program, why would you pay extra for Turbo Pascal?

I do that. I visualise the variables as being on the number line. If they’re the way round that they appear in the code, then the condition is true. Unfortunately my code reviewers tend not to like it when I write constant < variable.

To my knowledge, there’s never been a concerted campaign to get AWS to drop anyone as a client, whereas this seems to happen a lot to Cloudflare (Kiwi Farms being the latest example). And anyway, if Cloudflare MITMing the internet is bad, t

Not to the same extent. Sure it can be Wednesday 28th in Paris while it’s still Tuesday 27th in London… but then it will be Wednesday 28th in London soon. That’s really not the same thing as it being Wednesday 28th in Paris while it’s Wedne

I don’t understand why people are so up in arms about Cloudflare being a MITM, but not e.g. AWS API Gateway being a MITM.

Or the 11 missing days in 1582. I mean, programmers love to bitch about time zones, but that’s nothing compared to the stink we’d have raised if we’d been coding in a time when the date depended on which country you were in.

If New Year’s Day was still 25th March, that Twitter thread would have complained about the year starting partway through a month. March 1st would make sense in terms of Sep/Oct/Nov/Dec having the right names for their place

How much energy would this save per person? What proportion of their electricity usage is this? How much energy would be saved if Chrome used only as much energy as Safari?
