How much energy would be saved if Chrome used only as much energy as Safari?

- bob1029 4y agoThis is a really important question. I think we first need to figure out what metric has the most impact at scale. I have no specific numbers for this, but I feel strongly that each byte on the network consumes significantly more power than each byte in the cpu per equivalent unit time. Sending information across physical distances requires many computers, most of the time. I am not aware of any routers that consume 0 watts of power. Also, my intuition says that a CPU is faster than I can imagine, so whatever byte we were talking about processing is likely amortized under 1 clock cycle along with 500 others, averaging out to processing times that are infinitesimal. So, should we worry about how the browser is juggling bytes on the CPU, or how the bytes showed up in the first place?
