It’s got a little bit of tech, but I can’t recommend “The Soul of a New Machine” (Tracy Kidder) highly enough.

One track of pop, on repeat for the duration of the session. Today it was something by Dragonette, but that’s just what came to hand. After a few repeats, it becomes somewhat hypnotic, and something with human voices in is helpful for cut

BYOD resolves most of the factors that would make me want to provide my own office at home. If you’re reasonably happy with open-plan offices, that might be true. If you’re not... there seem to be few alternatives nowadays.

I think this is true, but it’s also a bit frustrating in that it’s not at all obvious that programmers are building more or better stuff as a result of the “bad working environment” side of things. So can’t we just lose that? (It probably

There’s a pretty strong social expectation of “getting a job”. When full time “working for the man” employment is what friends and family expect, it easily becomes the default. Mortgage lenders (and probably other financial institutions) a

Certainly. Most around here (UK) tend to make more ornamental than functional stuff nowadays, but skills are definitely out there. This being a somewhat “horsey” area, there are also plenty of farriers. It’s also somewhat accessible to ho

I already conceded the “tools” issue. That’s not necessarily a huge input though — good tools last a long time. Can you find a blacksmith who would trade tools for food? I’ve never had cause to find out but it wouldn’t shock me if you cou

The linked article mentions “Whiskey Lake” as an intermediate 14nm range (actually it says “desktop”, but I’ve seen it mentioned in a laptop context elsewhere). But I fear you’re right that LPDDR4 support is still being left for Coffee Lak

From what I understand LPDDR4 as part of Cannon Lake is directly affected by this delay. Do we have confirmation of this? It seems startling to release yet another generation of laptop CPUs without this... but I admit I can’t find anythi

The downside of this is that the 9am-ers don’t get a solid stretch of focus in the morning. Have you considered an asynchronous status-reporting thing instead?

What’s the reality here? Some sense of “fairness”? Because shop-workers need to work fixed hours, everyone should? You’re hiring developers to build software, not to be office furniture — do the exact hours worked matter very much?

That’s the one kind-of solid reason (albeit one which implies bad planning and/or inflexibility on someone’s part). But if so, you’d damned well better be giving anyone doing desk work flexible options for working remotely.
