At my job I have to deal with an old system that invented its own encoding, named TSS. The idea was to unify multiple charsets and encodings into one, before Unicode was a thing. But instead of coming up with one big a charset and assigning

I‘d happily use STA, even if equally bad, simply so my phone doesn‘t drop its internet connection.

Manufacturers not supporting DNG is so annoying. But of course they do it. Allows them to sell licenses to software vendors like Adobe or Capture One.

They don‘t, but they have to be consistent. You wouldn‘t want to apply a hundred-fold torque because you mixed up your units.

It seems most of the newer cameras (Z6 iii, Z5 ii, Z50 ii) and the Z9 support „Wi-Fi STA“ mode, as Nikon calls it. All other models apparently only do „AP“ mode, where the camera turns into an access point - super annoying. Curiously the Z8

> So it's based on the original code? But it's also said to be open source. I'm confused. I don‘t know for sure, but the source code could be based on a decompilation of the official server classes. Apparently decomp proje

That's one of the things, yeah. IIRC they tried 64-bit but gave up on it, one reason being the rendering code was hardwired to 32-bit, so there was no real benefit in the end. There are other solutions they had to find. The game has tw

You‘re not exposing business information, you‘re exposing client information. The information a system leaks might not be intrinsically valuable, but it can be used to deduce other data, especially over larger sets or time. For example, by

This would make replays or scrubbing count as additional views. To fix that, they would need some kind of set to uniquely store all clients, and that‘s questionable from a security and moral point of view, even for YouTube.

WASM is to webbrowsers what WebGPU is to webbrowsers. Designed with browsers in mind, but not bound to them.

Indeed. I think most phones already have some kind of parental control. I know Apple devices do. With screen time you can limit your kids social media use. Shouldn‘t be rocket science to ban those apps automatically, if that isn‘t already p

This is exactly the kind of thing the internet was made to share for. Made me lol. But I can‘t help thinking that the cat will eventually get bored of the fish it can‘t eat, and the you end up with a weird looking aquarium.

The max code point in Unicode is 0x10FFFF. ceil(log2(0x10FFFF+1)) = 21. So yes, a Unicode codepoint requires only 21 bits. 297334 codepoints have been assigned so far, that‘s about 1/4 of the available range, if my napkin math is right

Kerbal Space Program required a lot of clever engineering to cram an entire solar system into the constrains of 32 bit floats. There are articles and videos out there, highly recommended!

The Macbook tally light isn‘t necessarily wired to the camera. It very well could be independently software controlled. At least it was not too long ago. IIRC there was an article about this, posted here on HN. Macs used to have (still have

These depictions can probably be dismissed, just as any other depiction of Jesus. That painting has been made long after his death. The only clues to his likeness are deductions from biblical texts and historical context. For example, he mo

I don't know what your code is doing exactly. For comparison, here's my utf8 decoder (for a single codepoint): static UnicodeCodepoint utf8_decode(u8 const bytes[static 4], u8 *out_num_consumed) { u8 const flipped =

Are you referring to Unicode? Because UTF-8 is simple and relatively straight forward to parse. Unicode definitely has its faults, but on the whole it‘s great. I‘ll take Unicode w/ UTF-8 any day over the mess of encodings we had before

Totally agree. git notes might help a bit with some of those points, but what most shops need / want is something like GitLab. git itself is usually too low level.

This „4 year old technique“ apparently could give Apple an edge for on-device workloads. > short: both Apple and OpenAI are moving beyond diffusion, but while OpenAI is building for its data centers, Apple is clearly building for our poc
