No ANSI keyboard might be a deal breaker for my muscle memory and external keyboards (mechanical and MX keys that I had to import from the US because Logitech only sells ISO in the EU)

Yes, a unique index per table, not globally. Although the probability of a global colission is still extremely small.

Similar to the old situation in the article, we are using sequential 64 bit primary keys, but we use an additional random 64 bit key for external usage (instead of 128 bit). The external key is base64 encoded for use in URLs which results i

That's an interesting idea, how would you deal with the bits in the UUID that are used for the version? Setting them to random bits may cause issues for clients that try to use the identifier in their own database or application, as me

Very hot take indeed. As with all things, it depends and use the query planner to measure what actually makes a difference. In our application we have one important join that actually makes things a lot faster than the denormalized alternat

At a previous job we used ActiveAdmin on top of Rails, which is a sort of CRUDController as described in the article. Wonderful productivity when you are just starting out, but it got so bloated that it took over a minute to hot reload code

I have an ECS mini pc with a Core i3 and dual nic that I use as a router at home. For normal internet usage it stays well within that 5-10 watt range. Only slightly more than a raspberry pi but with much, much more performance.

I have a 1.5-year old and we bought 25 kilograms of used Duplo (toddler safe, bigger Lego from the same brand). There are bricks from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and they all still click together well and have barely faded in colour. The quality

Leaking something like a private key? You do that once, then you learn. If you don't learn, you remain a rookie. Or just reckless.

I agree about code reviews not being done "right", for my own subjective opinion of what a "right" code review is. I've been in situations where code review was required but effectively useless. Some would only focu

I'm talking about this specific piece of code: function handleClick() { setCount(count + 1); console.log({ count }); } Since count is enclosed within the function, it could be mutated by _anything_. In isolat

These "mistakes" are presented as React specific but I think most of them are general programming mistakes. Or perhaps JavaScript mistakes if your please, since not all languages allow you to make all of the mistakes with mutating

If those are the only apps you use, you might be fine for a while but lots of apps won't support old Android versions which could be problematic if you depend on such apps, e.g. for banking or signing into government services.

I co-founded a company as the only software developer and it's the most fun I've ever had building software. That includes all the refactoring, architecting and rewriting. What's important in my case is that I have awesome co

I couldn't agree more with the author, there's nothing worse than the self-flagellation of having a single change in one repository triggering a snowball effect where you have to update a dozen of other repositories, open another

This is fun and had a high potential for giving me some repetitive strain injury. My highest score of 97.1 doesn't visually feel like the best circle I've drawn though.

Same here, plasma for 10 years and now an OLED. The difference is night and day. I don't notice much difference between 1080p and 4K content because of the distance to the screen but HDR is amazing, especially for gaming.

Refactoring is also a process for the developer to build an understanding of what the code is supposed to do. This in turn helps figuring out bugs as well.
