Regardless of your political opinion on Andrew Yang and his proposed policies, I think it is worth hearing him out on his (and many other's) perspective on modern capitalism. The way our society define and value ourselves primarily on

It really depends on the field in my experience. I probably wouldn't place too much emphasis on requiring a phd for tech. But I would probably prefer a phd in biotech jobs (bench or computational).

Other people have it worse so it's okay to remain in a shitty situation? I don't think we should treat this like a victim competition.

I wonder how much of the gaming market consist of games that requires good latency. I would be perfectly fine playing Civilization or turn based games on this infrastructure as sub-100ms latency probably isn't that big of a deal here.

I remember attending a bioinformatics conference years ago when Nanopore presented one of their first devices. For those who are not in the field, Nanopore offers a palm sized device that can sequence DNA in real-time as the strand moves th

Here is a very general description of the system. The DNA probe has: - conjugated voltage sensitive dye - a conjugated reference dye - a targeting motif The targeting motif allows it to go into a specific organelle. The ratio of voltage sen

Maybe a more relevant analogy are medical procedures. IE. Banning specialized brain or heart surgery because only rich people can afford it.

This comment might not be relevant to the article. Isn't diversity ultimately relative to the group you are comparing to? And how you want to define the group might differ among people? Also how you weigh the trait in relation to its e

I'd never thought they would actually assemble this genome. But put together the father of string-graph assembly (Eugene Myers) and a shitload of money (PacBio reads), and you get an assembly of a 32gb genome.

I think the fact that we have to "imagine" why an intelligent designer would have designed something a certain way brings this idea out of the realm of natural science. If we assume there is a supernatural force behind everything,

There should be a better distinction made between EPIgenetics and epiGENETICS. The former is more about regulatory mechanisms (methylation, histone modifications, polycomb-like mechanisms, etc) on top of our DNA. The latter is more about no

If we put aside the financial concerns, which admittedly is a significant factor, what you get out of college is what you want to put into it. If you see it as just a hoop to jump through, then perhaps it's not worth it.

I think this was proposed back in the 60s with flatworms. There are some recent experiments, again with flatworms, where they studied this. Flatworms can regenerate heads. So they trained a flatworm to avoid a certain type of light and cut

I think there is a function to "boring" website design. For the purpose of communication, it is great that we have a common dialogue, as boring as that may be. People recognize buttons, textboxes, tabs, etc and knows how to use th

I guess the better analogy would be video games that are exclusive to a console ie. playstation exclusive or xbox exclusive.

I see where you are coming from. I would assume the pricing/exclusivity of items are optimized so that they can push their profits the highest they can go without alienating too many people. I guess this goes to show how important cons

I am not supporting a side here. But what exactly is the practical or moral issue with this? Is it that Amazon is squeezing money out of people who want the movie but probably won't use the Prime service otherwise? Is it false advertis

Cool. But I think the current state of the art is using minhashes (minimap2) to avoid doing expensive all vs all alignments. There is still a place for more sensitive alignments though.

If we are just talking about size of the genome, the salamander genome is extremely repetitive and is around 15x the human genome. I seem to remember there was one crustacean that was estimated to have a 100gb genome (30x human). Genome siz

The point I was trying to make is that there is no "more" or "less" important. There are just multiple layers of complexity that are all required to form the end result. DNA being the first layer just means the informati

I think any sane biologist will agree that there are layers upon layers of complexity on top of genotype. But the first layer is still DNA. There is a difference between gene-centric and gene-only. The former gives biologist an anchor point
