Could this be purposeful on LG's part? Amazon Wireless sells the LG Optimus G (with essentially the same parts) at $599 unlocked. The Nexus 4 doesn't come in a 32gb model, but the 16gb phone sells for only $349. Unless LG is getting one hel

How so? You can use the phone just fine without an Apple account - you just won't be able to download any apps. Bookmarks in Maps works without having to sign into anything.

Not sure how you're getting the 2x fps sensation. On a 4S, using the OpenGL ES analyzer in Instruments while browsing similar neighborhoods at similar zoom levels, I average ~35fps in Google Maps and ~55 in Apple Maps. Not terribly surprisi

Sure, you have the option of not using their app store. Any sane developer would realize that its financial suicide to ignore Google Play and release a purely sideloaded-apk app (or through Amazon's store, for that matter). Google charges t

Aside from PCMCIA/ExpressCard upgrades, which are useless nowadays thanks to USB2/3, the only upgrades available to laptops are memory + disk. RAM is cheap enough where companies can toss in 8gb (soon, 16gb) without a second thought, which

Any user who doesn't know what Gatekeeper's purpose is (and how to disable it) probably stand to benefit from keeping it on. I imagine these people are the ones most at risk for downloading malware. People who don't want/like the walled gar

Were there any rumors/news/anything today that triggered the movement? AAPL is behaving more like a penny stock than the $500-billion behemoth it is. It's also interesting to see how its P/E is lower than Microsoft's now. Given the generall

Better yet, encourage openness by funding/using OpenStreetMaps and strengthening their dataset. Nobody wins if Google/Nokia end up being the only owners of accurate map data.

Android fragmentation was never really about the resolution differences. As stated by the various Nexus 7/10 reviews out there, many Android apps on tablets are just badly resized phone UIs, but they're still functional. Badly coded apps mi

None of my half-dozen friends at Google have 20% time. I think the common joke that it's "120%" time might actually be accurate.

Wall Street (among other people) has this belief that Apple products are a temporary fad. Their argument is that at some unspecified point in the future, popular sentiment will do a 180, and the company will fall off the face of the planet

Aren't these FRAND patent fees handled through the actual baseband chipset manufacturer? From a logistics point of view, it seems like it would much simpler for Qualcomm to charge each of the licensees a fee for using the licensed tech pres

The only ones hurt by low pricing will be the manufacturers. Companies with no software expertise and no way to differentiate themselves (basically all the Android OEMs at the moment) will become the Dells and the HPs of the mobile space.

The post I was responding to praised Google for ditching LTE buzztech in favor of (among other things) better battery life. Real world data shows that this isn't the case - the "buzztech" actually provides an enormous boost to battery life.
